Roles of Nurse in Health Promotion

Five Fold Nursing Functions:-

1. Promoting Health and Wellness

2. Preventing Illness

3. Pain/suffering alleviation

4. Restoring Health

5. Creation of a spiritual environment

1. Health Promotion and Wellness:

– Wellness state of well-being. Engaging in attitudes and behavior


that enhance the quality of life and maximize personal potential

– For both healthy and ill.

2. Preventing Illness:

– The goal is to maintain optimal health by preventing diseases

– Nursing activities includes immunizations, prenatal and infant


care, and prevention of sexually transmitted disease.

3. Pain/suffering Alleviation

– The goal is to provide relief from pain to promote comfortable


healing process.

4. Restoring Health:

– Focuses on the ill client

– Extends from early detection of disease to helping the client


during the recovery period.

5. Creation of A Spiritual Environment :

– Provision of spiritual care.

– Involves comforting and caring for people of all ages who are
dying.

– Includes helping clients live as comfortable as possible until


death and helping support persons cope with death.

Role of Nursing in Health Promotion

• To: respond to health problems in population groups for all diseases or


public health threats including bioterrorism.

• To: Evaluate health trends and risk factors of population groups.

• To: Work with the community to develop targeted disease prevention


activities.

• To: Evaluate health care services.

• To: Provide health education, care, management to individuals and


families.

The Nurses roles and the levels of practice expected in nursing:

• Caregiver: Provides direct care to client.

• Coordinator: Coordinates members of the nursing team to provide


care to an identified population.

• Collaborator: Collaborates with members of the health care team to


achieve health objectives

• Consultant: Works with nurses, clients, citizen groups and other


health care providers

• Health Teacher: Teaches citizen groups and health care professionals.

• Counselor: Counsels client populations and citizen groups in health


related matters.

• Client Advocate: Advocate citizen groups and professional groups.

• Change agent : Works with citizen groups and professional groups.

• Leader: Demonstrates ability to provide leadership.

• Researcher : Understands research methods.

Preventative Health Care

Preventative health care nurses encourage:

1. Regular exercise: Nurses promote regular activity (preferably 30


minutes of exercise at least five days a week)

2. Avoidance of smoking and drug abuse: Aside from the addiction threat
associated with smoking and drug use,.

3. Moderated alcohol use: Education about the effects of alcohol


consumption,

4. Control of existing diseases
