Lesson Idea Name: History of the Creation of Airplanes- Wright Brothers

Content Area: Social Studies
Grade Level(s): 5th Grade
Content Standard Addressed:
SS5H1 Describe how life changed in America at the turn of the century b.Describe the impact on American life
of the Wright brothers (flight), George Washington Carver (science), Alexander Graham Bell (communication),
and Thomas Edison (electricity).
Technology Standard Addressed:
Knowledge Constructor Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct
knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.
3a Students plan and employ effective research strategies to locate information and other resources for their
intellectual or creative pursuits.
Selected Technology Tool:
Padlet Timeline, Google Slides, and research information from the schools Learning Management System
(LMS)

Levels of Technology Integration:
❏ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or
Choice” during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.
✓ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is
student-driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and
determining the technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of
a facilitator.
❏ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work
and promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
The tools that I have chosen for this lesson include Padlet Timeline and Google Slides. Students will be
referring to the timeline for information regarding the Wright Brothers invention of the ‘flying machine’. Then
students will be assigned a Google Slide to display their knowledge of the Wright Brothers. They can use Web
2.0 resources, as well as the timeline for guidance during the activity. The tool supports and enhances the
learning experience within the classroom because it is an interactive tool that helps students to engage with the
learning materials, then it can be displayed online through the shared Google Slides.

Lesson idea implementation:

The students will view the timeline and display research abilities using Google Scholar or another educational
research tool for 5th grade level learning. The students will create a slide to display their knowledge in a
creative way, through images, video links, and text explaining. The teacher will guide the students by providing
directions on the 1st google slide and answering questions, but this will be a student lead activity. The project
will be introduced by showing the students how to access Google Slides and how to view the timeline. The
students will be instructed to read the instructions/directions page of the Google slides, then create their own
slide. Student learning will be assessed based on the slide that they individually created.

The final product, which is the variety of student created Google Slides, will be used to inform/differentiate
learning by providing a creative outlet for students to display their learning in a variety of ways. This will
extend into student higher learning through the students creating their own slides, instead of the teacher
creating their slides and displaying it in lecture form. The lesson will be concluded when all students have
completed their slide. Feedback will be provided through student meetings at the half-circle table in groups of 3
to 4 students.
Reflective Practice:
I feel that the activities created could impact student learning by providing a creative research project in which
students can begin scholarly work through shared learning. Students will be encouraged to collaborate and can
view other students work on Google Slides. To further extend this lesson, I would ask students to decide
between the Wright Brothers (flight), George Washington Carver (science), Alexander Graham Bell
(communication), and Thomas Edison (electricity) to create a presentation to be displayed on individual
computers on Parent/Teacher night. The students will create their own presentation on their chosen subject,
using Google Slides, and have it displayed in the classroom for Parent/Teacher night so that the parents can see
their creative learning abilities. Another technology tool that would further enhance this project would be the
implementation of showing a short video of the Wright Brothers historical events, such as through BrainPop or
the Wright Brothers website.
