Abstract

Globally, 7% of adolescents are exposed to Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) per year (1).
STIs in Mongolia 14,964 cases had accounted and 21.5% claimed that they have STIs, 29.2% of
gonorrhea, 41.4% of syphilis, 29.2% of trichomoniasis and 0.2% of HIV / AIDS cases which
11.9% are between 15 to 19 years (2). This suggests that adolescents are at increased risk for
STIs.
STIs remain a major public health issue in the society of Mongolia. A cross-sectional study of
STIs among high school students in Ulaanbaatar (UB) showed students' awareness and sexual
behavior.
Data was collected from 1362 students aged between 15 to 16 years, 46.4% (632) were men and
53.6% (730) were women. 23.6% (354) respondents said were capable of preventing themselves
from contracting STIs, 44.9% (674) still learning to prevent them self and 31.5% (472) of
students have no attitudes towards preventing. Majority students 83.62% (1139) had no sex and
16.37% (223) of students had sex. However, 110 (49.32%) had sex with protection, 113
(50.67%) did not use protection and STI prevention approaches have been negative and sexual
behavior is negative. The figure shows that adolescents who are sexually active and who do not
use condoms are at high risk for STIs.
