Dell EMC Unity ESRS
Background Information

• When configuring ESRS, a number of issues can be encountered

– An error is provided when an issue is encountered, but customer feedback
suggests they are having issues understanding the error messages and the
actions to take

• In some instances, customers’ support accounts don’t meet the ESRS

configuration preconditions
• Many service requests have been raised for fixing customer accounts and
their site IDs

6 Dell – Internal Use – Confidential Pre-GA: Material subject to change.

Dell EMC Unity ESRS
What Have We Done?

• In Dell EMC Unity OE 4.1.1 and higher, the ESRS Readiness check can be
run to determine if ESRS can be configured
– Checks the Dell EMC Unity configuration/settings for issues
– Checks network connectivity to ESRS servers or gateway server

• In OE 4.5, the Unisphere ESRS Readiness Check was updated to include a

check for the Support Credentials entered into the system
– Ensures the Support Credentials are validated before attempting to configure
ESRS
– This check only applies to Integrated ESRS

7 Dell – Internal Use – Confidential Pre-GA: Material subject to change.

Configure ESRS with RSA Credentials
Overview

• In the Condor release Dell EMC personnel can use their RSA SecurID
credentials to configure ESRS on a system
– Currently the RSA SecurID is used in place of validating the Access Code via email

• When configuring ESRS with RSA credentials, a configured and verified

support account is not required
– The Readiness Check can be run without entering support credentials on the
system
– The system must be registered in the install base

• Applicable for Integrated and Centralized ESRS

• Goal:
– Increase the ESRS adoption rate and reduce time investigating and fixing ESRS
8
issues
Dell – Internal Use – Confidential Pre-GA: Material subject to change.

ESRS VE High Availability Cluster Support
Overview

• Centralized ESRS Virtual Edition (ESRS VE) supports multiple ESRS VE

servers to achieve high availability
– In codes prior to Condor, only a single gateway IP can be entered in the system

• In the Condor release two gateway server IPs can be entered to support a
ESRS VE cluster
– A primary and secondary IP for the cluster can be entered when configuring
Centralized ESRS

• If the primary server is unavailable, Dell EMC Unity will automatically switch
to the secondary gateway server
• Configuring Centralized ESRS with RSA Credentials is supported

Drive Firmware Upgrades
Overview

• Currently to upgrade all software/firmware on the system, multiple files must

be downloaded and installed on the system
– The Dell EMC Unity OE and upgrade drive firmware operations are two separate
processes

• In the Condor and future releases the drive firmware bundle will be included
in the OE file downloaded from Dell EMC
– Applicable to upgrade files for physical systems only
– The drive firmware package will be staged within the system

• The drive firmware bundle will still be available as a separate download

– The current software OE and drive firmware upgrade operations via Unisphere
and Unisphere CLI will remain the same

56 Dell – Internal Use – Confidential Pre-GA: Material subject to change.

Drive Firmware Upgrades
Overview (Continued)

• After a system has been upgraded to a new OE version a “Software

Upgrade Successful” message is displayed in Unisphere
• If the system was upgraded using an OE package that includes a drive
firmware bundle, the user is prompted to upgrade any drives which are not
running the latest firmware
– User can opt-out and skip the drive firmware upgrade operation
– If upgrade is allowed to proceed, the Upgrade Drive Firmware wizard is
automatically opened

SYSTEM ALERTS
Automatically Clear Solved Alerts
Background Information

• There are multiple ways to review the health of a Dell EMC Unity system
– In Unisphere the user can review the following:
› The “View System Status” icon (Green checkmark when healthy)
› The information within the System Health Dashboard View Block
› The information on the System View page
› The Alerts page

• When reviewing the alert event log, the user is presented with all alerts that
have occurred on the system
– In general, it can be hard for a user to determine which issues are current, and
which ones are resolved
– The user may need to search for a specific time frame, sort the view, or filter the
results

71 Dell – Internal Use – Confidential Pre-GA: Material subject to change.

Automatically Clear Solved Alerts
Overview

• In the Condor release all alerts will be assigned an alert State

– The alert State can be used to determine which alerts are current, and which ones
have been resolved

• There are four States for alerts:

– Updating - The current State of the alert is being updated
› Only seen when upgrading from pre-Condor to Condor or later
– Inactive - The alert condition has been resolved
– Active_Auto - The alert is still Active, and will be marked Inactive automatically
once the condition is cleared
– Active_Manual - The alert is still Active, and a user will need to deactivate the
alert to mark the alert Inactive once the condition is solved

• The Unisphere Alerts page contains a new “State” column

72 Dell – Internal Use – Confidential Pre-GA: Material subject to change.
Automatically Clear Solved Alerts
Overview (Continued)

• An alert’s State changes when: Active

– The software OE is upgraded from a Auto
version which did not support this feature
– The error condition is resolved
– The alert is repeating Active
Updating
• When reviewing the Alerts page in Manual
Unisphere or alerts via CLI, Alerts
marked as Inactive are hidden by
default Inactive
– In Unisphere the Alerts page is
automatically filtered by default = Automatic

= Manual
73 Dell – Internal Use – Confidential Pre-GA: Material subject to change.

Deactivating an Alert

• Active_Manual alerts must be manually deactivated by an Administrator

– Can be done in Unisphere, Unisphere CLI, or REST API

• To Deactivate an alert in Unisphere:

– On the Alerts page, select an Active_Manual alert
– Select the “Deactivate” button
– A “Confirm Deactivate” confirmation box will be shown, select “Deactivate” to
continue

• Acknowledging an alert is still supported

– Acknowledging an alert is a way to mark it as “seen”
– Acknowledging the alert will not be marked as Inactive
