1. What baffled Mr. Pulkit Mathur, the Chairman of Gokuldhaam Society?

Mr. Pulkit Mathur, the chairman of the Gokuldham society cited a year's cost of transportation
data. He found that the expenses for the shuttle bus services like maintenance, fuel, salaries,
insurance constituted more to the transportation cost, and in many cases, it did not run on full
capacity resulting in higher operating costs. He was baffled as to how to reduce this cost and
make it more cost-effective to the society and increase its efficiency.

2. What alternatives will you propose to resolve the problem faced by Mr. Mathur?

The following are our suggestion:

● Revise the shuttle timings such that it runs in full capacity

● Carpooling can be encouraged
● Encourage residents to use the force traveler when there are less number of travelers
(<=12)

3. What solution Professor Sachan should propose to solve this problem?

Step 1:

It is very clear that people in society are not using other vehicles available to them. The first step
should be to modify the transportation plan for the society.

Step 2.

For improving the transportation plan, he should have knowledge about the people and their
timings who need to use the transport for plying to the city.
Step 3.

In the mail, the data is available from December 2014 to June 2015. It is very much clear that
there is definitely a need for changing the transportation plan. After studying it is clear that shuttle
buses have been used in timings where they should not be used.

Step 4.

So, in the new plan, they should make the details for the residents who will need to use the
transport system of the society.

The details should include the timings and the capacity from each house of the society so that the
transport department will be able to make the vehicles available as per the timings and capacity.

Step 5.

Proposed to develop a digital app or a calling system for the transportation department so that
residents from society can mark their timings and capacities from each house every day. If there
are more than 12 passengers then use the shuttle buses and staff buses, whereas if there are equal
or less than 12 passengers then use force traveler. If there are less than and equal to 5 passengers
then use cars and Maruti vans. In this way, they will be able to make the chart for each day for the
vehicles based on the requirement and match according to the capacity given for each vehicle
This, in turn, will help in reducing the frequency of shuttle buses thereby minimizing the
transportation cost.

4. What will happen to the solution methodology if 1) the number of residents in society
increases every year and 2) when the data set increases to five years?

i) As the number of residents increases, we need to analyze the data again by updating the new
resident information. If the data exceeds the capacity of the available transportation, then we need
to increase the resource by purchasing more vehicles which are cost-efficient.
ii) When the data set increases, people may have sufficient money to buy their own vehicles, and
infrastructure facilities like road, transport, etc would also have developed. So residents can
choose their transportation, either personal vehicle, public transport, or shared transport.
