CASE 2 -Keeping Up With It

Samuel is in his mid-40s and has worked for Andres Enterprises for almost 20 years. Samuel has seen the
enterprise grow from just over 20 employees when he started to work for the enterprise to over 200 today.
Even though Samuel has been promoted over the years and his responsibility has increased, he has
recently become worried about his future at the enterprise. This has something to do with his uneasiness
in the use of computers. For the past five years, this was not much of a concern since computers were not
used in any HR applications. But with Internet gaining so much popularity especially in its application in
the field of HR, Samuel is starting to be restless. He feels he is no longer young to learn the new
technology aside from the fact that he is having a hard time understanding the system. Because Samuel is
so far behind his colleagues when it comes to using the new technology, he is shy to ask for help. To
make matters worse, a memo was issued by the head of HR informing everyone to actively use the HRIS
in the different HR functions, including the processing of applicants, payroll computations, and the
employees’ benefits administration.

Help Samuel solve his problem by following the steps below:


1. State Samuel’s main problem.
 Samuel unable or incapacity to do with the progress/advancement of technology
in the workplace.
 Samuel minor problem, The application of HRIS to the different HR functions
such as processing of applicants, payroll computations and employees’ benefits
administration as mandated by the head of HR.
2. Discuss the areas of consideration following the guide below.
 Samuel’s Strengths:
o He gain more Knowledge and experience in the field of work in his work
place .

 Samuel’s Weaknesses:
o Inability to learn quickly about technology
o Insecurity due to his older age

o Gaining popularity of advanced technology like the internet and
computers
o Training and classes on computers offered by schools and personal tutors
o Tutorial videos about computers and technology readily available in the
internet
 Samuel’s Threats:
o Demotion/Dismissal from job
o Promotion might be given to him in a longer period than before or not at
all
o Colleagues might advance in higher ranks more rapidly compared to
Samuel
3. Give your proposed solutions/alternative courses of action or ACA (minimum of three) to
help Samuel overcome his problem.

a) Request and join trainings and seminars about the application of the HRIS
 Free trainings and seminars (Seminars and trainings will be
funded by the company)
 HRIS features will be tackled thoroughly
b) Take classes about computers offered in schools
 Samuel will be taught about computers by professionals
 Deeper knowledge about computers will be obtained
c) Read, research and explore the world of computers
 Deeper knowledge about computers will be obtained

4. RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that Samuel should request and join trainings and seminars about the
application of the HRIS. Through this, Samuel will grasp deeper knowledge of the
information system. Moreover, it is most likely that the enterprise will be giving trainings
and seminars because it will also benefit the company since employees who doesn’t quite
understand the system will also be able to know how to use the HRIS. Another
recommendation Take classes about computers offered in schools that will help him in
his problem with computers. By taking a class in computer subject offer he can easily
adopt knowledge with computers, he will learn faster its features and it will also help his
ability to learn the HRIS. Aside from the aforementioned actions, it will also benefit
Samuel if he read, research and explore the world of computers in order to enhance his
knowledge in using such device. Reading articles and alike will allow Samuel to be
updated to technological advancement, thus, will also help him learn quickly the features
of the HRIS.
