Hester is paraded through town so everyone can see the "A". He carries his daughter,

Hester Prynne's real husband arrives during the parade through town. At home he

himself so that he can discover his wife's lover and take revenge on him.
Hester's husband pretends to be a doctor and takes a false name: Roger Chillingworth.

England, sent her to the Massachusetts Bay Colony while he was in charge of
business at home.
Rev. Dimmesdale:
He is a brilliant speaker, a good man, and a wise reverend, loved by all. He is also
Hester's lover and Pearl's father. He keeps his sin silent, and even publicly asks Hester

HISTORICAL FICTION EMPLOYS THE ELEMENTS OF LITERATURE AND THE
DEVICES OF FICTION. IDENTIFY AND DESCRIBE TWO LITERARY ELEMENTS
OR DEVICES THAT ARE EVIDENT IN THE MOVIE OTHER THAN CONFLICT,
ANTAGONIST, PROTAGONIST, AND IMAGERY. OTHER LITERARY ELEMENTS
OR DEVICES MAY INCLUDE: PROLOGUE, EXPOSITORY PHASE, VOICE,
SYMBOL, FORESHADOWING, FLASHBACK, IRONY, FOIL, OPPOSITION,
ARCHETYPE, MOTIF, CHARACTERIZATION, CLIMAX, AND DENOUEMENT. FOR
EACH LITERARY DEVICE THAT YOU IDENTIFY, DESCRIBE THE ROLE THAT IT
PLAYS IN PRESENTING THE STORY TOLD BY THE FILM
In the film the archetype of woman that the new england wanted is shown, that's why
the conflict Hester was in.
In the movie, you can see the bird that Hester's slave sees. It is the same bird that
appears at the beginning of the movie. This bird is taken as a sign of witchcraft and that
Hester's daughter is the devil's daughter.
MUSIC AND LIGHTING ARE PART OF THE WAY THAT THE MOVIEMAKERS
COMMUNICATE THEIR MESSAGE. GO DEEPER THAN THAT. GIVE TWO
SPECIFIC EXAMPLES OF HOW OTHER ELEMENTS OF THE CINEMATIC ART,
SUCH AS SHOT FRAMING, CAMERA ANGLES, CAMERA MOVEMENT, COLOR,
EDITING CHOICE, OR LENGTH OF TAKE WERE USED BY THE FILMMAKERS TO
GET THEIR POINT ACROSS.
The elements can be seen in the shots from the beginning, when the pastor is
swimming and Hester watches him.
Another is the taking of the Indo ritual in which he sees Roger and his madness.
DESCRIBE TWO IMAGES OR SCENES FROM THE FILM THAT STAND OUT IN
YOUR MIND. DISCUSS WHY THEY IMPRESSED YOU AND HOW THEY RELATE
TO THEMES EXPLORED IN THE STORY.
When Roger kills the slave, I didn't think he was so cruel. This is taken as a work of
witchcraft and for being a slave they do not inquire who is the murderer.
Another scene is when Roger cuts the hair of the one he had murdered, I am surprised
that the Indian rituals stuck to him so quickly.
DESCRIBE TWO EVENTS OR PORTRAYALS IN THE FILM THAT, ON THE WHOLE,
ACCURATELY REFLECT WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED AND TWO THAT DO NOT.
FOR ANY HISTORICAL INACCURACIES, DESCRIBE WHAT REALLY HAPPENED.
There is still the sexism of which he was a victim of by the authorities. They believe that
by being a woman they can take advantage.
Beliefs still exist in witchcraft and that certain events occur by the act of the devil.
In our times there is no longer slavery, as shown in the movie, that they had no rights
and that at their death no one said anything.
In our time there is no longer a cunning for acts of witchcraft, nor a punishment for
infidelity in such a strict way.
PICK ONE OF THE FOLLOWING FACTORS THAT PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN
THE FILM. CHOSE AMONG POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, RELIGIOUS, SOCIAL, AND
IDEOLOGICAL. HOW DOES THE FILM REFLECT THE FACTOR YOU IDENTIFIED?
BE SPECIFIC. FOR EXTRA CREDIT, PICK A SECOND FACTOR AND DESCRIBE
HOW THE FILM REFLECTS THAT FACTOR.
Religion plays an important role since Hester vitates badly with this factor, for not
mourning her husband and that her daughter is according to the authorities as the
daughter of the devil.
DESCRIBE A LESSON FROM THIS FILM THAT VIEWERS CAN APPLY TO THEIR
OWN LIVES: (1) IN DECIDING WHAT POSITION TO TAKE ON AN ISSUE OF
PUBLIC CONCERN OR (2) IN THEIR RELATIONS WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS.
DETAIL THE EVENTS THAT RELATE TO THIS LESSON.
Hester's courage is worth imitating, in order to fulfill some goal we must be as
persevering as Hester was when she did not want to say the name of her beloved.
We must be friends as was Hester, who was not able to give her friend, nor was she
going to let her die for something unfair that she had not committed.
IT COULD BE SAID THAT “HISTORY IS WHAT THE PRESENT CHOOSES TO
REMEMBER ABOUT THE PAST.” GIVEN THE FACT THAT THE AUDIENCE WILL
TAKE AWAY FROM THE MOVIE AN IMPRESSION OF THE HISTORICAL EVENTS
OR FIGURES PORTRAYED IN THE STORY, DOES THE FILM IMPROVE THE
VIEWER’S UNDERSTANDING OF HISTORICAL EVENTS? JUSTIFY YOUR
CONCLUSION
In this film some aspects of the new England are found, the influence of religion is
shown and how important it was in those times. The way women were treated in those
times, the frowned upon by a woman who had children out of wedlock.
The relationship of the settlers with the original peoples of the new continent, the
conflicts that existed between both cultures and the existence even of slavery are
shown.
