The purpose of this method statement is to ensure that correct data is collected prior to
commencement of construction activities on site. This method statement details the
procedures to be followed for:
a. Verifying the credibility of existing bench marks
b. Establishing temporary bench marks
c. Establishing routing lines and setting out for trench excavation.

3.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
PM/DPM shall ensure that all necessary tools & Instruments, safety protective equipments
are provided along with properly trained and qualified surveyors and made
available sufficiently in advance to the commencement of the work.

Safety Officer has to implement and enforce all safety precautions. He will also inspect the work
site regularly, and report deficiencies to the DPM / PM.

Site Engineer is responsible for the construction work and shall delegate a named Site
Supervisor who shall ensure that this procedure is fully implemented including
documentation till completion.

Surveyor is responsible to ensure that all surveying instrument being used are calibrated
and having valid calibration certificate and he shall ensure that all information,
data etc. required is to be taken and recorded on his Field Book.

4.0 ACTIONS
A. Verifying credibility of existing bench marks: The survey team will conduct a full

survey on all existing bench marks and monuments starting from one point and finishing
at the same point in a closed loop. In case there is a discrepancy between the given
data and the collected data by the survey team, a re-check will be done using the same
method above but in a different direction to make sure that human error is eliminated.
If any discrepancy occurs, then the survey team informs the Site Engineer who notifies
the Project Manager in writing.
B. Establishing temporary bench marks: After confirming the credibility of existing bench
marks and monuments, the survey team will establish temporary bench marks to cover
the whole job site. These bench marks will be protected, properly maintained then re-
checked on a regular basis to make sure that they have not been disturbed due to any
construction activity in the area.
C. Once the services/underground utilities Record Drawings are received from concerned
departments and parties, the survey team will start preliminary route survey to establish
routing lines. All services indicated on the Record Drawings which interfere with the
pipeline route are drawn and submitted to the Consultant / Engineer for comments and
approval. Upon receipt of approved shop drawings, setting out for excavation are to be
carried out in accordance with the required co-ordinates or set from road centres or
building lines as shown on Town Planning approved service corridors.
