    Problem No. 1: Find allowable height of the column for the given details. 5” dia,eter standard steel pipe
    column (A36 steel) with an applied load of 60 kips. Top is pinned and the base is fixed. A = 4.30in2, r =
    1.88”.

    Problem No. 2: The beam shown in the Figure has a 3 x 8-in rectangular cross-section and is loaded in a
    plane of symmetry. Determine and show on a sketch the principal and maximum shearing stresses at
    point A.
