Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited also known as MTNL is a government-owned

telecommunications service provider in the metro cities of Mumbai and New Delhi in India.
MTNL was incorporated as a Public Limited Company by the Government of India in 1986
to oversee operations of Delhi Telephone District and Mumbai Telephone District of the
Department of Telecommunications and to plan, develop, operate and maintain all types of
telecommunication services including Telephone, telex, wireless, data communication,
telematics and other like forms of communication. It had a monopoly in Mumbai and New
Delhi until 1992 when the telecom sector was opened to other service providers.

MTNL provides fixed-line telephones and WLL services. It also provides mobile services on
GSM and CDMA platforms, Broadband, ISDN and Leased Line services. It has been the first
to launch some of the latest telecom technologies in the country like ADSL2+ & VDSL2 in
broadband, IPTV on MPEG4 technology, VOIP and 3G Mobile service. It also provides other
services such as VPN, VOIP, and leased lines through BSNL and VSNL. The Company took
various steps to provide a host of value-added services like datacom, inet, DIDPABX, Voice
Mail, Radio Paging, ISDN and facilities like dynamic locking, call waiting/call transfer,
hotline, IVRS (Interactive Voice Response System) like local assistance changed number
information, and fault booking system to customers. In November 2011 MTNL started its
high-speed broadband service fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) with core network speed up to 1
Gbit/s which offers several services based on triple play services like IPTV, HDTV, 3DTV,
video on demand, bandwidth on demand, instant video conferencing, interactive gaming etc.
MTNL was the first to launch the toll-free service in Delhi in 1998. As of January 2019, it
has 6.71 million subscribers.

MTNL is providing telecommunications beyond boundaries through its Joint Ventures and
Subsidiaries. As of March 2018, the company has two subsidiaries, one joint venture and one
associate company. MTNL is present in Nepal through its Joint Venture United Telecom
Limited (UTL) and in Mauritius through its 100% subsidiary Mahanagar Telephone
Mauritius Limited (MTML), providing mobile, data and international long-distance services.
MTNL has restructured its subsidiary company Millennium Telecom Ltd. (MTL) as a joint
venture company of MTNL and BSNL entering into the new business stream of international
long-distance operations and MTNL-STPI IT Services Ltd. is another joint venture between
Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited,
(MTNL). It is listed on Bombay Stock Exchange, London Stock Exchange and on New York
Stock Exchange.
