TIMBER AS A COLUMN
Designing of timber column

• Column is structural element which transfer load parallel to its longitudinal axis.
• A slant or incline column is known as STRUT
• Can be rectangular or circular in cross section
• Solid column can be divided into three types
1. Short column
2. Intermediate column
3. Long column
• Classification is done on the basis of their slenderness ratio (𝜆)

𝑙𝑒𝑓𝑓
𝜆=
𝐿𝐿𝐷

Where, leff = effective length of column

LLD = least lateral dimension

• Effective length (s)

When, Both ends are free = unsupported length
1 end is fixed = 0.80 X unsupported length
Both end fixed = 0.65 X unsupported length

Note : slenderness ratio (𝜆) should not exceed 50

• Least lateral dimension (d)

For, Square = side of sqare
Rectangle = smaller dimension
Circular = side of square of having same area as circle

𝜋(𝑑𝑖𝑎𝑚𝑒𝑡𝑒𝑟)2
𝑑=√
4

SHORT COLUMN
When (s/d) ratio is less than 11

𝑓𝑐 = 𝑓𝑐𝑝

INTERMEDIATE COLUMN
When (s/d) ratio is equal or greater than 11 but less than K8

𝐸
𝑘8 = 0.584√
𝑓𝑐𝑝

1 𝑆 4
𝑓𝑐 = 𝑓𝑐𝑝 [1 − ( ) ]
3 𝑘 𝑑 8

LONG COLUMN
When (s/d) is greater than k8

0.329 𝐸
𝑓𝑐 =
(𝑠⁄𝑑)2

𝑠𝑎𝑓𝑒 𝑎𝑥𝑖𝑎𝑙 𝑙𝑜𝑎𝑑 = 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑟𝑜𝑠𝑠 𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 × 𝑓𝑐
