GASEOUS DIFFUSION COEFFICIENT

APPARATUS
MODEL: BP 10

T
HE Gaseous Diffusion Coefficient Apparatus (Model : BP 10) has been designed to allow measurement of
molecular diffusivities to familiarize students with the basic notions of mass transfer theory. The gaseous
diffusivity apparatus involves diffusion with bulk flow.

EXPERIMENTAL CAPABILITIES DESCRIPTIONS

♦ direct measurement of mass transfer rates in the The diffusion of vapour A from a volatile liquid into another
absence of convective effects gas B can be conveniently studied by confining a small
♦ use of gas laws to calculate concentration differences sample of the liquid in a narrow vertical tube, and
in terms of partial pressures observing its rate of evaporation into a stream of gas B
♦ use of Fick’s Law to measure diffusion coefficients passed across the top of the tube. Normally, for simple
in the presence of a stationary gas instructional purposes, gas B is air and liquid A is an
♦ measurement of the effect of temperature on diffusion organic solvent such as acetone or methyl alcohol.
