FIRE
DAMPER
INTRODUCTION

Smoke and Flames rising from residential

buildings, hotels and warehouses have become a
common sight nowadays. Out of 1.2 million fires
reported in the U.S.A in 2013, almost 39% of the
cases were structural fires causing more than 2800
deaths and $9.5 billion in property damage¹. The
‘Center for Disease Control and Prevention’ notes
death from fires and burns are the fifth most
common cause of unintentional injury deaths and
third leading cause of fatal home injury. SMOKE
inhalation during fire accidents is another major
reason for deaths in such cases.

In a case study conducted by NFPA, it was found

that the HVAC system was not linked to smoke
detector system and did not shut off during fire
accident. The air from the operating HVAC system
and Natural ventilation increased the growth of the
fire. It is therefore important to cutoff air supply by
shutting down HVAC system during fire. Various
fire safety equipment are prescribed by national
authorities in their building codes to overcome fire Fire dampers are installed in fire rated walls /
hazards in order to save life and property. One barriers / partitions where the HVAC ductwork

are two basic types of damper operations: a) Curtain UL Testing:

to interrupt airflow in order to restrict the passage of their stringent testing procedures successfully. Our
fire & smoke. dampers have withstood the demanding test
requirements of UL 555 and UL 555S standards.
Curtain type: The blades are folded and held under Both these standards call of series of tests like:
spring tension using a bi-metal fusible link. Heat of
165oF (74oC) inside the duct is sufficient for fusible
link to melt and break, thus allowing blades to shut
like a curtain under the force of the springs attached.
The fire damper acts as a barrier between fire and
non-fire zones thus containing the fire in the
compartment from which it originated. This gives
sufficient time for occupants to escape and move into
safety.

Multiple blade type: This model operates mainly

using an electric actuator. Based on the application –
i.e. Fire, Smoke or Combination Fire & Smoke; the
actuator can be configured with the Building
management system (BMS) or a smoke detector.
The electric actuator is energized with power supply
to keep the damper open under normal conditions. Fire Test
When heat/smoke is detected by the thermal
responsive device (TRD) / smoke detector, power
supply to actuator will be disconnected.

Should the BMS be used to close the actuator, it has

to be configured to disconnect power supply to
actuator. Once the circuit is open, the damper closes
automatically by the force of the springs inside the
actuator. Such actuators are otherwise known as
spring return actuators. TRD’s are supplied with a
reset button to re-establish power supply thereby
keeping the damper in open position.

Gravity Shutter
Horizontal Operatable Pressure Relief Shutter

Model: CI - Air GS-H

CI - Air GS-H

CI - Air GS-H
Features:

A horizontal operatable shutter which operates to equalize the pressure across it.
The frame and blades are constructed of extruded aluminum anodized as standard painted, powder
coated are available on request.
The frame has a typical wall thickness of 1/16” and separated from the movable blades by an extruded
rigid PVC track which is riveted to and becomes an integral part of the frame. A1/8” thick, 3/8” wide foam
tape is installed on the blades where they overlap to insure a good seal and to reduce noise.

Each shutter is carefully designed to equalize the pressure in such areas as a compressor of fan room with
the outside.
The blades are designed and positioned in such a way that if the pressure in the room increase the blades
automatically lift and open relieving the pressure in the room.
When the room pressure is normalized the blades drop to the closed position by gravity.

These devices are also employed at the end of exhaust ducts where they would open when the exhaust
fan was turned on and would close when the fan was turned off.

CI - Air PHL - H

General:

CIC penthouse louvers CI - Air PHL - H are considered as typical louver units for both air intake and exhaust
applications.
They are designed and built to become a permanent part of the building.
They maintain their pleasant appearance and effective weather protection as a result of their rugged,
durable, extruded aluminium construction and careful workmanship.
They are usually furnished with either mullion or mitered corners and incorporate the normal CIC fresh air
louver blades CI - Air PHL - H as standard. However, any other type of CIC louver blades can also be used
as optional.

Penthouse Louver (CI - Air PHL - H) Penthouse Louvers (CI - Air PHL - H)
With Mullion Corner With Mitered Corner

Description:

CI - Air PHL - H penthouse louvers have as a standard 2” deep fixed horizontal blades.
The blades are carefully designed to get low pressure drop, maximum free area and to prevent rain-water
penetration.
They are available in 1.25” flanged frame and are built and mounted to an internal framing with mullion
corners.
The integral framing mullion structures are furnished with a standard 1.6” x 1.6” extruded aluminium
profiles.
For the other mitered corners type penthouse louvers, blades are beveled and welded internally at the
end.
The top of the penthouses are covered with flat or pitched roofs of aluminium sheets.
All of the four louver sides are of removable type for easy maintenance purposes, Penthouse louvers can
also be supplied as optional with galvanized bird or insect screens and / or aluminium washable air filters
of 1”, 2”, or 4” thickness.

Definitions

Definitions:
: Is the air stream velocity measured at the face of a louver in FPM
Face velocity
and it corresponds to the effective free area.

CFM : Is the air flow rate in cubic feet per minute.

: Is in ft2 , and is related to the other parameters by the equation :

Effective free area CFM = Free Area x Face velocity
= A k x Vk

: Is the inside basement perimeter in feet and is calculated from:

Penthouse louver perimeter P= 2W + 2L, W and L are the horizontal dimensions of the penthouse
louver.

Selection Procedure

Example:

Select a penthouse louver for an exhaust requirements of 3300 CFM with a total pressure drop of 0.1” W.G.

1) From the pressure requirement table 2 it shows that an 800 FPM velocity results an exhaust pressure
drop of 0.1” W.G.
2) Determine the effective free area:

CFM
Effective free area Ak =
Vk
3000
= = 4.125 ft2
800
3) From table 3 the 4.125 ft2 effective free area is suitable for the following penthouse louver’s sizes:
• P = 5 ft, H = 28 inch.
Could be suitable for a penthouse basement dimensions of (WxL) - 12” x 18”.
• P = 6 ft, H = 24 inch.
Could be suitable for a penthouse basement dimensions of (WxL) - 12”x24” or 18” x 18”
depending on the duct size.

Note:
The approximate effective free area in square feet can be calculated by using the following formula:-

Effective free area (Ak) = (H-0.5) x (0.5P-0.25)

Where, H is height in ft and P is Inside Perimeter in ft.

Pressure Requirement:

Selection Procedure

Example:

Louver size required for an exhaust requirements of 1200 CFM with a total pressure drop of 0.07” W.G.

1) From the pressure requirement table 7 it shows that a 600 FPM velocity results an exhaust pressure
drop of 0.07” W.G.
2) Determine the effective free area:

CFM
Effective free area Ak =
Vk
1200
= = 2.0 ft2
600

3) From table 8 the 2.0 ft2 effective area is mostly suitable for the size 42” x 18”.

Note:
For other louver sizes not shown in table 8. The approximate effective free area in square feet can be
calculated by using the following formula:-

Effective free area (Ak) = (0.58H-0.34) x (W-0.3)

Where, H is Height in ft and W is Width in ft.
