Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture

Ship Strength NA21004 3-1-0, 4 credits

Spring 2013

Instructor : Dr. N.Datta Contact Hours : Mon 11:30-12:25pm, Tue 9:30-11:25am, Thu 10:30-11:25am

Office hours : Monday 2:30-4:30 pm Grading Homeworks : 20% Endterm : 50%

Books
1. Strength of Ship Structures, Muckle.
2. Engineering Mechanics of Solids, E.P.Popov.
3. Principles of Naval Architecture, Volume 1 (Chapter 4)

Skills required : MATLAB, Microsoft Office, AutoCAD.

Homeworks There will be 4 homeworks in the semester. Each home-work will be of 10 marks. It has to be
compulsorily done individually. It can be discussed only with the instructor in the office hours. There is penalty of 2
marks (out of 10) for late submission. Programming homeworks need to be submitted in person by running the code
before the instructor and generating the outputs. This will be done during office hours. Submission slots will be provided
to all students.

Tutorials There will be 5 tutorials in the semester. The student has to solve the tutorials in class.

Syllabus Forces acting on ship structure; Idealization of ship structure as hull girder; Longitudinal bending of hull
girder—weight and buoyancy curves; deflection, shear force and bending moment diagrams; Section Effect of shear force
in bending; Stresses in inclined conditions; modulus-bending and shear stresses, longitudinal strength standards. Analysis
of bulkheads and decks; Structural discontinuities and stress concentration; Analysis of beam and frame using stiffness
method; Introduction to elasticity; Plane stress and plate bending problems . Buckling. Torsion. Warping. Yield and
fracture. Statically indeterminate beams. Thick plate theory. Ship construction materials. Dynamic loads.
Transverse strength. Local strength.
