Analysis of Indeterminate Beams and

Frames by the Slope-Deflection Method

Dr. Cesar Carrasco

Slope-Deflection Method
• This is a procedure for analyzing
indeterminate beams and frames.
• This is an important method because it is
the basis for the development of more
general structural analysis methods.
• In the slope-deflection method an
expression, called the slope deflection
equation, is used to relate the moment at
each end of a member to both, the end
displacements and external loads applied to
the member.
Derivation of the Slope-Deflection
Equation

w(x)
Fixed-End Moments
Steps of the slope-deflection method
1. Identify all unknown joint displacements
2. Use slope deflection equation on all members
3. At each joint, except fixed supports, write the
moment equilibrium equation. Sum of the
moments equals zero.
4. Substitute the expressions for moments (2) as a
function of displacements into equilibrium
equations (3) and solve for unknowns
(displacements)
5. Substitute displacements (4) into expressions for
member end moments (2). Once member end
moments are known, the shear and reactions can
be calculated using the balance equations
Braced and Un-Braced Frames

Braced Un-Braced
Braced Frame Examples
Example 12.1
Using the slope-deflection method determine the member end moments and draw the shear and
bending moment curves. I=240in4 and E=30,000 ksi.
Example 12.2
Determine the member end moments in the braced frame shown. Also compute the reactions at
support D and draw the shear and bending moment diagrams of members AB and BD.
Example 12.3
Determine the reactions and draw the shear and bending moment diagrams for the frame shown.
IAB=ICD=120in4, IBC=360in4 and E is constant for all members.
Example 12.4
Draw the shear and bending moment diagrams for the two-span beam. I=144in4 and E=29,000ksi.
Un-Braced Frame Examples
Frames with Lateral Displacement
• The sideways displacement
constitutes an additional
unknown
• An additional equation is
required.
• This equation results from the
sum of the forces in the
horizontal direction being equal
to zero. This equation is known
as the shear equation
Example 12.5
Analyze the frame by the slope-deflection method. E is constant for all members. IAB=240in4,
IBC=600in4 and ICD=360in4.
Example 12.6
Analyze the frame by the slope-deflection method. E=30,000ksi, I=240in4
