STATEMENT: Two different types of drugs D1 and D2 were applied on a certain

patients for increasing the weight at interval of one week time period. From the
following observation, Can you conclude that the second drug is more effective in
increasing weight, use 1% level of significance?

Drugs 8 12 13 9 3 8 10 9
D1
Drugs 10 8 12 15 6 11 12 12
D2

WORKING EXPRESSIONS:
Since, there are two samples given and we have n< 30 so we use double mean.

1. Hypothesis Formulation
a. Null Hypothesis, H0: µ1=µ2 (There is no significant difference between the two drugs.
b. Alternative Hypothesis, H1: µ1<µ2 (The second drug is more effective in increasing
weight.)

2. Test statistics under Ho:

((n1 -1)×s 2 + (n 2 -1 )×s 2 )
1 2

Pooled Variance (Sp2) = n1 +n 2−2

X 1−X 2

Tcal =

n1 n2

3. Level of significance: α is the level of significance. Here, it is 0.01.

4. Degree of Freedom(df) : n1 + n2 – 2

5. Critical Value: Critical or tabulated value of t is obtained from the table according to the level
of significance, degree of freedom and alternative hypothesis.
6. Decision: Based of critical value, the null hypothesis is rejected if |tcal|>|ttab|, otherwise accepted.
7. Conclusion: Draw suitable conclusion as per the decision taken above.

CALCULATIONS:
The testing of hypothesis for small sample and decision making is done in the following tables:

Drugs D1 Drugs D2
8 10
12 8
13 12
9 15
3 6
8 11
10 12
9 12

Items/Statement Symbol Value

Null hypothesis H0
Alternative hypothesis H1
Sample size(D1) n1 8
Sample size(D2) n2 8

Sample mean(D1) X1 9

Sample mean(D2) X2 10.75

Sample S.d(D1) S1 3.023715784
S12 9.142857143
Sample S.d(D2) S2 2.764571783
S22 7.642857143
Level of significance α 0.01
Degree of freedom n1+n2-2 14
Pooled Variance Sp2 8.392857143
Test Statistics t(cal) 1.208128498

Critical Value t(α,df ) 2.624494068

Decision We accept H0

RESULT: Hence, from above hypothesis setting in MS Excel, it is found that the null
hypothesis is to be accepted.

CONCLUSION: In this way, it is concluded that there is no significant difference between two
drugs.
