ABSTRACT
The purpose of this project is to design and fabricate smart vacuum storage system. The
equipments that will be used in this project are 240 mm diameter of polycarbonate desiccator,
hose, vacuum pump, brass female thread valve, digital barometric pressure sensor, silica gel,
Arduino Uno, transmitter, relay. Desiccator is used to store reactive metals and chemicals in a
dry and vacuum condition. To vacuumise the space in desiccator, a vacuum pump is used to
suck the air inside. Then, the lid is closed tightly due to the atmospheric pressure acting on it
and thus no air can enter desiccator. The valves is used to control the movement of air using
vacuum pump. We will design and fabricate smart vacuum storage system by adding
transmitter and pressure sensor to detect when there is air flow in the desiccator, the pump
will be automatically stop the vacuumizing process.
INTRODUCTION
Nowadays, the vacuum storage system that have in industrial laboratory is mostly conducted
by manual user. So this system really need the man power to control. In addition, it will take
longer time to complete the system processes. Therefore, our group are focusing on adding

pressure sensor into the vacuum storage system, so that it will functioning automatically. This
project is to design and fabricate the smart vacuum storage system by adding the pressure
sensor and Arduino Uno system into the vacuum storage system. In this project, the system
was set the minimum pressure inside both desiccators when it reached that certain pressure,
the pump automatically turn off. The objectives of this project are to create a system equipped
with Arduino and transmitter and ease the laboratory assistant to get precise time to alert the
user. Besides, to prevent the metal pieces and chemicals from rusting and damaging in short
time and to create two dry and vacuumed container as to preserve the metal pieces and
chemicals. Vacuum storage system is a method of packaging that removes air from the
package prior to sealing [1-2]. This method involves (manually or automatically) placing
items in a desiccator, removing air from inside, and sealing the package. The intent of vacuum
storage system is usually to remove oxygen from the container to extend the shelf life of foods
and, with flexible package forms, to reduce the volume of the contents and package [3-6].
Vacuum storage system reduces atmospheric oxygen, limiting the growth of aerobic bacteria
or fungi, and preventing the evaporation of volatile components. It is also commonly used to
store dry foods over a long period of time, such as cereals, nuts, cured meats, cheese, smoked
fish, coffee, and potato chips (crisps) [7-8]. On a more short term basis, vacuum packing
can also be used to store fresh foods, such as vegetables, meats, and liquids, because it
inhibits bacterial growth [9-11]. Vacuum storage system greatly reduces the bulk of
non-food items. For example, clothing and bedding can be stored in bags evacuated with a
domestic vacuum cleaner or a dedicated vacuum sealer [12-15]. Desiccators are sealable
enclosures containing desiccants used for preserving moisture-sensitive items for another
use [16-20]. A common use for desiccators is to protect chemicals which are hygroscopic or
which react with water from humidity [21-29]. In this project, we will use metal powder as
the testing material. As we are suggested by our supervisor, Dr. Wan Sharuzi Bin Wan
Hasan to use polycarbonate desiccator, we will use the polycarbonates desiccator and we
choose to use model DWA 215. This is because it is highly durable to impacts [30-32]. Main
unit and lid are completely transparent plastic desiccator [33]. So we can instantly know the
status of items that are stored and when replacing silica gel. It will safely withstand high
vacuum pressures. Clear polycarbonate desiccator having extra heavy walls to eliminate the
danger of implosion [34]. Made entirely of polycarbonate, lightweight and unbreakable.

Looks like glass but is more economical than a glass vacuum desiccator. It can be use with
or without vacuum. Desiccator will not shatter or implode at full vacuum when used
according to instructions packed with product [35]. It is for room temperature use only.
Cannot hold vacuum at low temperatures for more than a few hours. Eliminated the trouble
of applying grease. Maximum strength in the transparent resins. Besides, it is difficult to
crack even if dropped, so we can use it with confidence [36-37]. The ceramic plate is heat
resistant, corrosion resistant, has an anti-sticking property and won't scratch [38]. As a
feature of PC, it has strong tensile strength, is durable to impacts, and is heat-resistant,
lightweight, unbreakable and more economical.
METHODOLOGY
Basically, the process of this project is start from vacuum pump. Vacuum pump will suck all
the air inside the 2 desiccators but before that valve 1 need to be closed the other will be
opened. After the suction the pressure sensor will indicate 0.015 bar the regulator will trigger
the there is no more air inside the system then the pump will be turned off.
This is the ideal vacuum system design for our group. Some components might vary due to
the limitation of budget. Electronic components such as pressure sensor and Arduino board
is not drawn due to the very detailed parts which is not significant in this diagram.

The mechanical element process in this project is on the rack. The rack is made from L bar
steel for the frame, Perspex for the wall, Galvanised Iron sheet metal for the base, and nut
and bolts for the joints. To joining the L steel bar for the frame, we use grinder to cut the L
steel bar and arc welding technique to joint it. Then, for the wall and base, we cut the Perspex
and Galvanised Iron sheet metal by using cutting machine, drill machine to make a hole and
use bolts and nuts to joint it.
Procedure
Storing item
1. Metal piece or chemical that need to be stored is put inside the desiccator.
2. Amount of silica gel is ensured sufficient to absorb the air in desiccator.
3. The lid is closed properly.
4. Valves above the respective desiccator and valve nearest to pump are opened.
5. Vacuum pump is then turned on.
6. Pressure that shown on the display are observed.
7. Valves are closed when 0% of pressure with allowance is reached and air is totally
vacuumed.
8. Pump is turned off.
1. Valves which leading air in and valve above the respective desiccator are opened.
2. The pressure displayed is observed.
3. Lid is opened in slow horizontal motion after the pressure is increased to nearly
atmospheric pressure.
4. The item is then taken out.

MATHEMATICAL MODELLING
Frequency 60Hz
Flow rate 57 L/min
Ultimate vacuum 2Pa
Power ¼ HP
Weight 6.3 kg
Inlet port 1/4” Flare (minor diameter – 11.445 mm)
Volume Dessicator
The metal powder or chemical was placed inside the desiccators. The amount of silica gel is
ensured sufficient to absorb the air in desiccator and to make sure is dehumidified. The lid is
closed properly. The main power source for this system was turned on then the switch of the
pump was turned on. Then the ‘ON’ switch on the control panel was turned on. The process
of vacuumizing was started. Pump is turned off when the pressure sensor detect when it
reached 0.015 bar.
Table 3 shows that the obtained results to reach 0.015 bar are in the range of 332 – 353
seconds. The average for desiccator 1 to reach constant value 0.015 bar is 345.5 seconds and
for desiccator 2, the average time taken is 345.75 seconds. These are time taken for
desiccators vacuumised without metal powder inside thus, the reading maybe different when
there are metal powder inside the desiccator. Theoretically it will take longer time to reach
vacuumised condition that we have set which is 0.015 bar.

CONCLUSION
As a conclusion, the main focus of this design and fabrication is to design and fabricate the
smart vacuum system by adding relay, transmitter and pressure sensor inside the system. Here
are some additional reasons why vacuum sealing is an effective and cost saving form of
storage. Non-food items are protected from oxygen, corrosion and moisture-damage. For
example you can vacuum seal unused oxygen absorbers, matches, socks for bug out bag,
medication, emergency forms, etc. Insect infestation is eliminated due to a low oxygen
environment. Seal dehydrated foods and dried herbs for longer term storage.
