Unit 1: Smiling and laughing

- smirk (n,v): a smile that expresses satisfaction or pleasure about having


done something or knowing something that is not known by someone else -
cười nhếch mép, nham hiểm.
- be in convulsions (id): to be laughing in a way that you cannot control –
cười điên loạn (convulsion(s) – chấn động, co giật).
- be rolling in the aisles (id): to laugh without being able stop – cười không
ngừng.
- be wreathed in smiles (id): to be smiling and looking extremely happy – vui
cười (wreathe – cuộn, quấn quanh).
- beam (v) /biːm/ / beaming (smile): to smile with obvious pleasure – tươi cười
rạng rỡ.
- belly laugh (id): a loud, uncontrolled laugh – cười vỡ bụng, cười to
- burst out laughing (id) = bust out/up laughing
- cackle (v) /ˈkæk.əl/ - cackling: to laugh in a loud, high voice – cười khúc
khích/ khanh khách.
- chortle (v, n) /ˈtʃɔː.təl/ : to laugh, showing pleasure and satisfaction – cười như
nắc nẻ
