The Advanced Communication class is a ten week course designed to provide advanced level
students the opportunity to polish their speaking skills with a focus on clarity. It includes a
focus on each students pronunciation needs, particularly with respect to the supra-segmental
features of language: rhythm, stress, intonation, linking and reduced speech.

A variety of professional and social scenarios will be used including formal and informal
workplace communication. Participants will be recorded and/or videotaped weekly and use
self- evaluation and peer feedback to assess their progress.

Self-reflection and practice outside of class are key features of the course and are based on
the following assumptions:
o Pronunciation improvement & speech modification happen because of what students do.
o Changes to speech occurs gradually, primarily out of class, and mainly in situations of
covert rehearsal.
o It is difficult to focus on pronunciation & speech issues while you are engaged in
communication, but by reflecting on your own performance you will be able to develop new
habits of speech.

In class you will have the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of conversation topics and be
able to listen to the presentations of others. You will give and receive both formal and informal
feedback from your classmates.

The instructor will provide handouts to practice various features of language and will make
several resources available to you.

You will be expected to listen to your in-class recordings, transcribe a portion of your speech
and write a two paragraph reflection of your recorded speech. This will include reflecting on,
transcribing, editing and possibly re-recording a portion of your in class recorded speech.

Please Note: There will be no class on Thursday, March 16
