ASSIGNMENT

Q. Why forests are important for any country and what kind of measures Government of
Pakistan is taking for the forests?
ANS:

INTRODUCTION:
Forests are continuous areas of land dominated by trees. Forests, a thick development of trees,
together with different plants, covering an enormous area of land. A forest is an eco-system—a
network of plants and creatures communicating with each other and with the physical
condition.
We tend to take forests for granted, underestimating how indispensable they still are for
everyone on the planet. That would quickly change if they all disappeared, but since humanity
might not survive that scenario, the lesson wouldn't be very useful by then.

IMPORTANCE OF FORESTS:
Following are the few reasons why forests are important :

THEY BLOCK WIND:

Farming near a forest has a bunch of advantages, similar to bats and birds that eat insects or owl and
foxes that eat rats. But group of trees can also serves as wind break, providing a buffer for a wind
sensitive crops. And beyond securing those plants less wind also makes it easier for bees to pollinate
them.

THEY MAKE IT RAIN:

Large forests can impact regional climate pattern and even make their own microclimates. . The
Amazon rainforest, for example, produces climatic conditions that not just promote regular
rainfall there and in nearby farmland however possibly as far away as the Great Plains of North
America.

THEY HEAL US:

Forests gives us many natural medications. Asthma drugs comes from cocoa tree. Walking in
forests can offer better health benefits, too, including stress relief, reduced blood pressure, and
stronger immune system.
THY FIGHT FLOODING:
Tree roots are key allies in heavy rain, especially for low-lying areas like river plains. They help
the ground absorb more of a flash flood, reducing soil loss and property damage by slowing the
flow.

FORESTS SLOW DOWN GLOBAL WARMING:

After oceans forests are the biggest carbon sink. More forests means less carbon dioxide and
less global warming.18 percent of global warming is due to the loss of forests in the world.

THEY CREATE MAJESTY:

Natural beauty may be the most obvious advantage. The dynamic mix of shade, greenery,
action and serenity can yield concrete advantages for individuals, however, like convincing us to
appreciate and preserve old-growth forests for people in future .

FORESTS PROVIDE JOBS AND INCOMES:

The financial value of services provided by the forests worldwide is evaluated 16.2 trillion dollars. In
addition to the supply of clean water and air, these services include numerous indispensable products,
including wood (construction, furniture, paper, energy, etc.), resins, fruits, honey, ingredients for
medicines, cosmetics, detergents… to name just a few. They have an important role in the tourism.
Forests create job for more than 10 million people. It is also important to note that most of the world’s
population depends upon forests for their daily need like cooking and heating.

MEASURES GOVERNMENT OF PAKISTAN IS TAKING FOR THE

FORESTS:
As forests are very important for any country so government of Pakistan is taking some important
measures to grow forests. The Climate Change Ministry has initiated a project at a cost of Rs 3.652
billion in all four provinces through which plantation of 100 million new trees will be ensured until
2021.The project called ‘Revival of Forestry Resources in Pakistan’ is initiated under the prime
minister’s `Green Pakistan Programme’. Listing the steps taken by the present government to facilitate
and provide guidelines to provincial governments to raise forest cover in the country. On the prime
minister’s direction, a policy has been prepared in consultation with provinces and stakeholders, which
includes broader rules for forest protection and to increase the forests.

The existing forests should be protected. Apart from commercial cutting, unorganised grazing is also one
of the reasons. There are several forest diseases resulting from parasitic fungi, rusts, mistletoes, viruses
and nematodes which cause the destruction of trees. The forests should be protected either by use of
chemical spray, antibiotics or by development of disease resistant strains of trees. the government
should pass the acts for conservation of forests. The government should encourage forests
developmental activities like social forestry, agro-forestry, etc.
