My Life in Song

Task:
Your job is to create an album of songs that tell the story of you and your family.
You may choose to include songs that have lyrics that match your life experiences
or perhaps pick songs with a certain mood that reflects an important event. You
may even choose to write a song or two. Your album’s cover will be your Family
Coat of Arms (see Coat of Arms assignment).

1. 5-7 songs that represent yours and your family’s life

2. ½ page reflection for why you chose each song (you can hook it into your
timeline)
3. Album Cover = Coat of Arms

Tip – You may choose a song or two with the future in mind as well as reflecting
back on your life so far.

Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on your life, the people in it, and the
experiences you’ve had. This assignment is meant to make you think critically
about how you can represent your life story through music. Critically and
creatively thinking are encouraged.

*Think deeply about the people, places, and experiences that have shaped who
you are when choosing songs and writing reflections.

Please choose between 5 and 7 songs for this project. Each song must have:
 A YouTube link to the song
 A reflection of why you chose the song
o Reflection must be detailed ½ page maximum

Media:
There are many different options to share your songs and reflections.
 PowerPoint – 1 slide per song / reflection
 Microsoft Word – clearly label song title
 Prezi – online slideshow website
 Paper and pencil – if you don’t have access to the above technologies
Grading:
 Writing: You will be graded on your writing ideas, structure, organization,
and conventions using the same writing rubric we have used all year.

 Representing: You will be graded on how well you can represent your life
through the song choices. Explaining clearly and thinking critically about
some of the important themes in your life.

 Speaking: You will be presenting a summary of your album to a small group

of students and to Miss Lee through a video call. You will be expected to
give a brief overview of three of the songs you chose and will be able to
play 30 seconds of 3 songs of your choice.

 Critical Thinking: Are you able to clearly explain yourself? Can you go above
simply matching events with songs? Can you make connections between
the themes in your life and in a song? Pay attention to the mood of the
song. Pick out important parts of your life and represent them.
