ESTIMATION OF BLEACHING POWDER

AIM

To determine the amount of chlorine present in a given sample of bleaching

powder.

PRINCIPLE

The available chlorine in the given sample is estimated in terms of iodine

liberated in the reaction. It is known as iodometric titration.

PROCEDURE

Standardization of Sodium Thiosulphate

About 0.1N (0.49gm) of potassium dichromate is weighed accurately and

transferred to 100ml standard flask and solution is made up to 100ml. The given
sodium thiosulphate is taken in burette. 10 ml of potassium dichromate is pipette
out into a conical flask and titrated against sodium thiosulphate after adding 10ml
of potassium iodide and 2N sulphuric acid when the yellow colour fades slightly,
2-3 drops of freshly prepared starch solution (indicator) is added and titration is
continued till disappearance of blue colour. Titration is repeated for concordant
values.

Estimation of Bleaching Powder

The given sample of bleaching powder is taken in a standard flask and made upto
100ml. 10ml of bleaching powder solution is pipette out into a clean dry conical
flask and 10ml of potassium iodide and sulphuric acid are added. It is then titrated
against sodium thiosulphate in a burette when yellow colour starts fading, 2-3
drops of freshly prepared starch indicator are added and titration is continued till
the blue colour disappears. The titration is repeated for concordant values.

RESULT
The percentage of chlorine in a given sample of bleaching powder is ________.

CALCULATION:

Volume of K2Cr2O7 used (V1) = ml

Volume of SodiumThiosulphate (V2) = ml

Normality of K2Cr2O7 (N1) = 0.1 N

V1*N1 = V2N2

N2 = V1*N1 / V2

2.
CALCULATION:

Volume of bleaching powder used (V3) = ml

Volume of SodiumThiosulphate (V2) = ml

Normality of SodiumThiosulphate = 0.1 N

V3*N3 = V2N2

N3 = V2*N2 / V3

Amount of available chlorine in the given sample=

N3*Equalent weight of bleaching powder*volume/1000.
