1.1. 6$)(81,7Π- A COMPLETE SOLUTION FOR SEAL WATER CONTROL AND

SEAL CONDITION MONITORING

6$)(81,7Πis used to control and monitor seal water flow and pressure at
each seal. It is also used to monitor seal condition during operation.

Typical applications are pumps, mixers and other rotating devices used in pro-
cess industry which use WATER as seal liquid.

1.2. RELIABLE AND COMPACT ENTITY

6$)(81,7Πbenefits:
• Seal monitoring is reliable and easy.
• Can be connected to process control system of the entire factory.
• No complicated piping connections - no potential leakage points.
• Simplified maintenance and seal installation - no seal water pipelines to be
disassembled.
• Less spare parts required - no couplings or valves required in the storage.

1.4. FLOWMETER DISPLAY CLEANING DURING OPERATION

Normal operation 6$)(81,7Πis equipped with a special

test and clean button that enables you to
clean the flowmeter display of any impuri-
ties which may collect while in use and
which may make getting readings more
difficult.

Cleaning/testing function When the button is pressed, a cleaning

piston cleans the entire display area.
Cleaning can be carried out without any
effect on flow rate, pressure or the opera-
tion of electrical alarm system. Cleaning
does not cause a low flow alarm, because
the floating indicator is moved away from
the alarm sensor.

Flow rate and pressure value can be easily checked at a glance.

1.5. NON-CLOG VALVES - RELIABILITY

Impurities in seal water can often cause control

valve clogging and jamming. 6$)(81,7Πflow
regulating valves operate on sector principle.
They let larger particles pass through flow
openings easier than traditional pin valves. Flow
regulating valves are equipped with easy-to-use
adjuster knobs.

Flow regulating valves are also the closing

valves.

Adjuster knobs are a part of standard flow

regulating valve. If required, flow regulating
valves can be set to be adjusted by manual tools
and to be locked as follows:
• Remove adjuster knob end cover plates
• Remove adjuster knobs (locking screw located under the cover plate).
• Attach flow regulating valve locking nuts (locking nuts are in the
6$)(81,7™ package).
• Use hex key to adjust the control valves (hex key is in the 6$)(81,7™
package).

1.6. CHECK VALVE – PROVIDES TRUE PROTECTION

When there are problems with

pressure or seal damage oc-
+2 curs, check valve prevents
the product from getting into
6$)(81,7Πand to the seal
water line.

In ordinary check valves, the

valve spring is located at the
product side. A valve like that
gets easily clogged, when im-
purities have access to the
spring housing. In 6$)(81,7Œ, the spring is located at the clean seal water
side. Impurities have no access to the valve and therefore the valve does not
get clogged.

In 6$)(81,7Πsystem equipped with hoses, check valve is attached to the

6$)(81,7Πbase plate. This makes it easier to attach the hoses to the seal.

1.7. ELECTRICAL ALARM

An inductive alarm is an accessory which

can be connected to 6$)(81,7Œ. It
monitors seal water low flow limit. The
alarm impulse can be connected to proc-
ess control system of the entire factory.
The electrical alarm can also be used for
start-up and operation monitoring. Please
see section 2.6, Technical specifications,
inductive alarm.

1.8. HOSE MARKINGS

Hose couplings are marked with

,1 identification rings to make hose
installations easier.

1.9. SEAL WATER CONNECTIONS

In 6$)(81,7Œ base plate, threading is either R1/8” (BSP-P) or NPT 1/4”

(USA). Please see section 3, 6$)(81,7Πselection table and ordering exam-
ple.

1.10. UP-GRADING

2.2. OPERATIONAL LIMITS

6$)(81,7Πcan be used only in applications that use WATER as seal liquid.

Water temperature must be within +2 … + 60 °C (36 … 140 °F). The maximum

water pressure in the control unit is 25 bar. The maximum pressure limit must
not be exceeded under any circumstances.

2.3. OPERATION CIRCUMSTANCES

6$)(81,7Πmust be installed so that it does not get exposed to mechanical

wear and tear.

Hot surfaces may not be near 6$)(81,7Œ, since they may be able to raise
the temperature in 6$)(81,7Œ over 50 °C (122 °F). Due to danger of freez-
ing, 6$)(81,7Œ must not be used in temperatures below + 2 °C (36 °F).

6$)(81,7Πmaterials have been selected so that its corrosion resistance is

sufficient in normal factory circumstances. Materials are not resistant to strong
acids, alcohols and carbon hydrates. Weak acids and alkalics do not create
any problems.

2.4. ACCURACY

Control units are manufactured for three flow rate ranges:

2.6. ELECTRICAL LOW FLOW ALARM AND ADJUSTMENT RANGES

6$)(81,7Πcan be equipped with an inductive sensor.

The sensor acts as a low flow alarm and alarms the systems when the flow rate
is too low.

There are two types of standard alarms: Both are of double-wire alarms of type
NC (normally closed), when the switch is not activated. Protection class is
Nema 4, IP 67.
If the current and type of electricity are known for certain, model DC-1 is rec-
ommended. Its overload protection prevents possible damages caused by
wrong connections.

Note: Double wire sensors always have some leakage current. Some old proc-
ess control logic systems do not tolerate leakage current at all. In these cases,
use an auxiliary relay or triple wire sensor.

On special order, it is possible to get for example three-wired sensors or sensor

suitable for EX explosion-protected facilities. Please, consult manufacturer for
guidance.

Note: pressure fluctuations in seal water line can cause unnecessary alarms. Er-
roneous alarms can be inhibited by e.g. programming a delay into the process
control system in the following way:

Fluctuation in the flow, sensor sends an alarm -> delay 20 seconds - > alarm - >
delay 5 minutes -> device operation, unlocking and process equipment shutdown.

2.7. SAFETY IN OPERATION

From the safety point of view, the flowmeter display is the most critical component
in 6$)(81,7Œ. Limit values for pressure or temperature must not be exceeded
under any circumstances.

If there is a need to change the flowmeter display, make sure that the screws are
tightened evenly. Tighten the screws only to the tightness that is required for O-
rings to seal the flowmeter display against the base plate.

For models SFP (SFP-C) and SFD (SFD-C), always use FKHFNYDOYHin the water
line going to seal. In cases of a seal damage, it prevents the potentially poisonous
or hot process liquid from entering the flowmeter and seal water piping.

Using electrical alarm system is highly recommended. It speeds up data collection

in cases of damages.

7.4. OPERATION OF ELECTRICAL ALARM

ALARM FUNCTION

The alarm signal is issued by an opening contact. The normally closed contact opens
when the flow rate falls below a preset lower limit.

INDICATOR FUNCTION

LED light on. Flow rate within permissible range.

LED light off. Low flow alarm activated.

ADJUSTMENT RANGE OF THE ALARM UNIT

• Model 03: 0,5 - 2,0 l/min (0,1 - 0,5 GPM)

• Model 08: 1,0 - 3,0 l/min (0,25 - 0,75 GPM)
• Model 15: 6,0 - 12,0 l/min (1,5 - 3,0 GPM)

Œ
6$)(81,7 - System for Seal Water Control and Seal Condition Monitoring.
27
6$)(81,7ΠMANUAL

ADJUSTMENT OF THE ALARM UNIT

1. Set the flow to the desired lower limit by the Flowmeter.

2. Loosen the locking screw and attach the alarm in to the body and move the alarm hori-
zontally to the position in which the alarm is activated. The alarm is at the minimum
value of the adjustment range when the alarm is in the leftmost position as viewed from
the rear of the alarm unit which is, e.g., 1 l/min (0,25 GPM) for Model 8. To increase
the setting toward its max. value which is, e.g., 3 l/min (0,75 GPM) for Model 8, move
the alarm to the right.
3. Tighten the lock screw of the alarm.
4. Check the correct function of the alarm unit by the LED indicator. The LED should turn
off at the alarm point and stay off when the flow rate is reduced to zero. The LED
should stay on only when the flow is within the permissible range of flow rate.
5. Finally adjust the seal water flow rate to desired value with the help of the Flowmeter.

NOTE! Unnecessary alarms may also be caused by the occational pressure fluctuations in the
seal water line. Such erroneous alarms can be inhibited by, e.g, programming a delay in
the process control system or using a delay unit with an independent power supply.

The delay can be programmed as follows:

Fluctuation in the flow -> delay 20 seconds -> alarm -> delay 5 minutes -> shut
down of the equipment.

1. Can I use any other seal liquid than water?

• No. 6$)(81,7Œ has only been calibrated for water.
• Also, the rubber parts of 6$)(81,7Œ have been designed for water only.

2. How do I clean a dirty flowmeter display?

• Wipe the exterior surface with a moist cloth.
• Use the test and clean button to clean the inner surface of the flowmeter dis-
play. If necessary, use a brush and cleanser.

3. Does the use of the test and clean button affect the seal water pressure and
seal water flow?
• No, it does not.

4. Are there special seal water requirements for 6$)(81,7Œ?

• The recommendation is to follow the seal water recommendations given by the
seal manufacturer.
• If the water contains a lot of humus, the Flowmeter must be cleaned more of-
ten.
• Do not use water containing fiber.

5. Are there any special requirements for the operation circumstances?

• The temperature must be between +2°C to +50°C.
• Notice the chemical resistance of the plastic parts (test and clean button, pres-
sure gauge, scale sticker).

6. Does the pressure gauge tolerate pressure fluctuations?

• The glycerine filled pressure gauge tolerates pressures within the scale on the
pressure gauge.

7. Can I use 6$)(81,7Πfor purposes other than controlling and monitoring wa-
ter flow and pressure?
• Yes, 6$)(81,7Œ can also be used for monitoring the condition of seals and
seal water lines.
• Please see section 4, Trouble shooting for seals and seal water system.
8. What causes the alarm to go off?
• An inductive low level switch triggers the alarm when the seal water flow goes
below the set value.
• An inductive sensor recognizes the location of a metal float.
9. Is it possible to connect the alarm to AC (Alternating Current) and/or DC (Direct
Current)?
• AC-1 alarm can be connected to both AC and DC.
• The DC-1 alarm can be connected only to DC.

• When using DC-1 alarm both PNP and NPN connections are possible.
• Please see section 2.6, Electrical Low Flow Alarm and Adjustment Ranges.

11. Is it possible to have triple wire alarms?

• Yes, DC-3 is a triple wire alarm.

12. What is the purpose of the red needle (memory pin) in the pressure gauge and
the red pointer (memory pin) in the Flowmeter?
• Both serve as memory indicators. You can mark the preset values by these in-
dicators.
• The memory indicators also serve the purpose of monitoring condition.

13. How can I be sure that the check valve has been installed the right way?
• An arrow in the body of the check valve shows the flow direction.

14. What connector thread sizes are available?

• All of the common R- (BSP-P) and NPT-thread sizes (1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2).

15. Are there any other 6$)(81,7Πsizes available than 0-8 l/min and 10 bar?
• Yes, please see section 3, 6$)(81,7Œ selection table and ordering example.

16. Can I use steel reinforced hose?

22. Why is the alarm sensor a NC (normally closed) type?

• The connection of the NC type of sensors to the Process Control System is
made to be failsafe, which means that damage to the cable also triggers an
alarm.

23. Why is a double wire sensor used?

• The double wire is a common requirement.
• This means savings in cable costs.

24. Why is an inductive sensor used?

• The operation principle is simple and it has been proven to be reliable.

25. A customer has an old DF-2 or DF-1 sensor and wants to change it. What can
I do?
• Replace the old acryl part with a new one. DF-2 and FS-1 are no longer avail-
able so a new, inductive alarm must also be used.

26. What does “water permanganate number” mean?

• The number indicates the amount of humus in the water.

27. The alarm does not allow leakage flow. What can I do?
• In the case of leakage flow, you need to connect an auxiliary relay or triple wire
sensor.

28. What if the Flowmeter gets dirty very quickly?

• The quality of the seal water should be checked.
• The test and clean button should be used more often.

29. Can I connect one 6$)(81,7Πto several seals?

• No. It would not be possible to monitor the seal condition or to be sure that the
water flow to the seal is adequate.

30. What do I do if there is no alarm?

• Check that the sensor has been placed properly in its groove.
• Check the connection.
• Disconnect the sensor and test it separately.
• Replace the sensor.

31. What if the float gets stuck?

• Press the test and clean button several times while the water pressure is on.

32. Is it possible to get 6$)(81,7Πof special build?

• Yes, if the ordered quantity is sufficient to cover the cost of design.
• Consult Safematic Engineering for guidance.
