Module 2:
19th Century Philippines as Rizal’s Context

Enhancement Activity:
In concise, well-planned sentences, please answer the three questions below:
1. What was the situation of the Philippines during Spanish colonization?
During the Spanish colonization, there is corruption in the religious sectors
and in the government. Filipinos were often treated as inferiors and were not
given as much privilege as the Spaniards. We were treated as slaves and lowly
beings in our own country.

2. How did this affect the philosophy and belief of our national hero?
Rizal believed that a conquered country like the Philippines should not be
taken advantage of but rather should be developed, civilized, educated
and trained in the science of self-government. He bitterly assailed and
criticized in publications the apparent backwardness of the Spanish ruler’s
method of governing the country.
Rizal’s guiding political philosophy proved to be the study and application
of reforms, the extension of human rights, the training for self government
and the arousing of spirit of discontent over oppression, brutality,
inhumanity, sensitiveness and self love.

Such issue cannot be easily resolved. Every country has its own experience of
corruption and the Philippines is one of the worst ones. But as a young Filipino,
