Given the following temperature readings:

Elevation (m) 0 50 100 150 200 250 300

Temperature (C) 20 15 10 15 20 15 20

What type of plume would you expect if the exit temperature of the plume is 10 C and the smokestack is (a) 50 m tall?
(b) 150 m tall? (c) 250 m tall?

Solution:

a. Based on the figure above, for the 50 m tall smokestack it has super adiabatic lapse rate, thus looping will form.
Hence, at 50 m tall smokestack a looping flume can be expected.
b. On Figure 1, at 150 m tall smokestack, an inversion occurs, and fumigation will form. Therefore, at 150 m tall
smokestack fumigation can be expected.
c. Similar with the 150 m, inversion occurs. So, at 250 m tall smokestack fumigation can be expected.
