13.

0 FINANCIAL AID
Financial assistance in various forms, such as awards, scholarships and loan schemes
are available at UTAR for eligible students to enable them to pursue their studies at
UTAR. Additionally, there are also external scholarships / loans and financial assistance
made available by private and government organizations. In addition, Malaysian
students may apply for the National Higher Education Fund (Perbadanan Tabung
Pendidikan Tinggi National, PTPTN), and Malaysia Scholarships. Interested students
are advised to seek advice from the Division of Examinations, Awards and Scholarships
(DEAS) for more information about the loans and scholarships available.

13.1 UTAR Scholarships / Loans

UTAR Scholarships are special scholarship schemes for full-time students who
demonstrate scholastic excellence. These scholarships are granted to students
in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements and to those who
have fulfilled the eligibility criteria at entry level. Scholarships are funded by
UTAR and donations from private organizations and individuals, such as UTAR –
The Star Education Fund, UTAR – Sin Chew Daily Education Fund and UTAR –
Nanyang Education Scholarship, to name a few. These scholarships are also
available for outstanding and financially needy students who have the
determination to succeed.

UTAR also offers UTAR Sport & Talent Scholarship. Students who possess a
proven track record of excellence in the field of talent such as in music, art,
theatre, writing or sports, especially at the national and international levels would
stand a good chance of being awarded these scholarships.

• Student Assistants

Full-time students may work part-time as student assistants.


Students may register their interest online and the University
Departments concerned may then shortlist the students for
interview when there are available vacancies.

• Student Assistantship (Under Research Grant)

This assistantship is open to students of UTAR, and it and


opportunity for students to be involved and assist in research
projects and thus enhancing their exposure and experience in
research. The offer is tied to specific research projects and is
subject to the availability of project funds. Recipients are to perform
research work associated to the project under the supervision of a
project leader or supervisor.

Reimbursement Rate and Maximum Number of Hours per Week


(i) Daily Rate and Limits

Undergraduate student: RM7.00 per hour up to 15 hours per week.


Postgraduate student: RM9.50 per hour up to 30 hours per week.

(ii) Monthly Rate and Limits

Undergraduate student: maximum of RM500.00 per month


Postgraduate student: maximum of RM1,200.00 per month

• Research Assistantships

The University also offers a number of Research Assistantships to


qualified candidates enrolled in research based postgraduate
degree programmes. The offer is tied to specific research projects
and is subject to the available of project funds. Research
Assistantships may provide funding for tuition fees in part or in
whole and monthly salary. Recipients are to perform research work
associated to the project under the supervision of a project leader
or supervisor.

Students may obtain more information regarding Research


Assistantships from the Institute of Postgraduate Studies and
Research (IPSR).
