MODULE OUTCOME:
Upon completion of this experiment, students should have the:
 Able to create simple electronic circuit using free ware ExpressPCB Tools software
(https://www.expresspcb.com/) – download classic.
 Able to define the symbol for electronic components which will use in electronic circuit.
 Able to understand the electronic circuit design flow structure and step by step in design the
simple electronics circuit.

THEORETICAL BACKGROUND:

Introduction:
Electronic components symbols are the important part which in electronic design. All electronic engineers
required to recognize all kinds of symbol for electronics components since this is the fundamentals for
develop and designed the correct circuit for electronic applications. Furthermore, the schematic circuit is
very important for simulation and circuit fabrication since all electronic circuit simulation and fabrication
should start with the schematic drawing.

PRE LAB WORK:

Read this document, especially the Experimental Work section. Search the internet and grasp as much as
possible the material before going to the lab. Students should understand the basic operation of
operational amplifier by answering the following questions:

1. Please identify and draw all symbols for the components in Table 1.
Components Model / Value Symbol
Transistor (NPN) Q2N222
Capacitor 10uF
Resistor 100k
AC Power Supply 1 VAC
DC Power Supply 20 VDC
Inductor 10mH
Table 1: Electronic Components and Symbol

2. Describe the five major processes for creating schematic using the ExpressPCB software.

*Make sure all students download both schematic and layout software before coming to the PCB
Fabrication Lab.

EXPERIMENTAL WORK:

2
ELECTRONIC SCHEMATIC EEE430

This lab introduces the basic schematic circuit design concept and flow. The schematic is an important
part in electronic circuit design since schematic is first step in designing or fabricating any electronic
system.

Creating Electronic Schematic Project

1. Open the ExpressPCB and select ExpressSCH from the menu.

2. Create a new file and named it as pcb430lab1.

Select and Place the components

1. Select the components as shown in Figure 1. Please make sure you place all components first
before making any connections.

Figure 2: Components Placement

3. Choose the right components that show in Figure 1 and position the components in the right
direction as shown in Figure 1 for avoiding complexity during routing process, and follow by insert
to schematic as shown in Figure 2.

4. Named the components as shown in Figure 1. Make sure all components named according to the
right named as stated in Figure1.

5. Repeat process step no 2 until finish place the whole components in Figure 1.

Connect the Wires

1. Once complete the components placement, student can connect the components terminal by
selecting the wire function from the left toolbars and select place a wire button.

2. Follow by placing the wire from the components terminal to the other components terminal as
shown in Figure 1.

Edit the Components Properties

1. Components properties can be edited by double click on the component.

2. The following windows as shown in Figure 3 will be appearing after this selection.

RESULTS:

1. Brief explain the process of generating schematic using ExpressSCH?

2. Explain how to name the component in ExpressSCH?

3. Provide the schematic diagram result as shown in Figure 1? Please provide the full Figure which
is consists of author name, lab session and lecturer name by writing in the designer details box
on the bottom right of the layout.

DISCUSSION:
1. For the discussion, discussed the details process of generating the schematic diagram using
ExpressSCH software?

2. If we have additional components to be added in the schematic, what are the processes we need
to do? Please explain.

3. What are the effects if our schematic is not connected to ground or supply?

4. Explain how to add components value in ExpressSCH?

QUIZ:
1. Can the wire in the schematic cross each other?

5
ELECTRONIC SCHEMATIC EEE430

2. How to differentiate between connected wire to another wire and wire which just cross and not
connected?
3. Can user simulate current and voltage using ExpressSCH software?

CONCLUSION:
Conclude in detail the findings and the outcomes of this experiment. This should include the summary of
knowledge gained, comments and discussion of the results, errors and their possible sources and how
this experiment can be improved.
