Rotational motion-Sports
Linear vs rotational motion
Relation between linear and circular motion

Linear Displacement = Angular Displacement X radius of the Circular path

Linear Velocity = Angular Velocity X radius

Linear Acceleration = Angular Acceleration X radius

Problems
• An electric fan was rotating with a speed of 210 rpm. Its velocity is increased
to 630 rpm in 11 seconds with the help of a regulator.
Calculate the angular acceleration of the fan.
• Determine the torque on a bolt, if you are pulling with a force of 200 N
directed perpendicular to a wrench of length 20 cm.
• Calculate the force required to produce 20 Nm torque at an angle of 50º from
along a 300 cm rod?
Moment of inertia
• A quantity expressing a body's tendency to resist angular acceleration, which
is the sum of the products of the mass of each particle in the body with the
square of its distance from the axis of rotation.
Mass vs moment of inertia
• Mass => how difficult is it to move a body?
• Moment of inertia => How difficult it is to spin a body?
• Mass => not a function of shape, position of the body
• MI => is a function of shape of the body and location of axis of rotation
More on it!!!
Torque vs force
• Can torque be non-zero for zero force?
• Can torque be zero for non-zero force?
It is hard to spin a body if
A Mass is distributed near the axis C Mass is distributed far from the axis of
of rotation rotation
B Mass is distributed on the axis of D None of these
rotation

merry-go-round with a force of 50 N. The diameter of the
merry-go-round is 3.0 m. What torque does the child apply?

A. 70 N m into the screen

B. 70 N m out of the screen

• A cable is wrapped around a uniform, solid cylinder of radius 'R' and mass
'M'. The cylinder rotates about its axis, and the cable unwinds without
stretching or pulling. If the cable is pulled with a force of 'F' Newtons, what is
its acceleration?
