ECE 6331 Semester Project

Project Assigned on: December 07th 2016 Project Deadline: January 18th 2017

You are required to design a 610 W SOALR MPPT charge controller for charging a 12V Lead-Acid Battery
with target to achieve maximum efficiency with minimum size and cost. The battery is part of a UPS system
installed in your home. Solar power is available from an array of two 305 W each PV panels with the
following specifications:

VOC = 64V, ISC = 5.9A, VMP = 54.5V, IMP = 5.59A

Your report is to include the following.

1) Background Literature:
a) Lead Acid Battery Charging algorithms with your choice
b) Advantages and disadvantages of MPPT charging
c) Summary of MPPT charging methods
d) Your choice of MPPT algorithm with justifications.
2) System Design:
a) Make a detailed block diagram showing the existing UPS, battery and charge controller with the solar
array.
b) Please answer these questions:
i) Do we need to turn off the UPS internal charger that charges from utility?
ii) If we don’t, will the battery be overcharged?
iii) Should we provide isolation in the charge controller?
c) Design Options:
i) Two PV panels are connected in parallel. In this case the solar array voltage is the same as a
single panel voltage. The charge controller sees this as input voltage and will convert this to the
battery voltage for optimized charging.
ii) Two PV panels are connected in series. In this case the solar array voltage is 2X single panel
voltage. The advantage is reduced current compared to the above design option. The charge
controller sees this as input voltage and will convert this to the battery voltage for optimized
charging.
3) Choose a converter topology that meets the criteria set above.
4) Perform calculations for magnetic and capacitors and specify all passive components in detail.
5) Specify and Choose semiconductors.
6) Simulate your converter with MATLAB/SIMULINK
7) Analyze your design for losses and efficiency.

Project Deliverables: Write a detailed report describing your work, calculations, assumptions and design
outputs. Your design must be simulated using Simulink and you are required to submit running simulations.

Plagiarism: This is like a take home exam only and must be undertaken alone. Copying some ones work is
not allowed. If found guilty, the report will be graded with zero marks.

Note: This is individual project for ALL students.
