Civil Engineering Academic Programs

@ IIIT Hyderabad

International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad

Gachibowli, Hyderabad 500 032, India
Civil Engineering
• IIITH is successfully running an innovative Building Science &
Engineering (BSE) teaching and research program with B.Tech
in Civil Engineering and MS by Research in Building Science.

• It aims for conducting research to build an environmentally

sustainable habitat by integrating environment, materials,
services, science and engineering while making use of latest
technology in computer science and electronics.

Civil engineering is an oldest engineering discipline that

deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of
roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings.
BSE Programme
• Given the multi-disciplinary nature of the proposed program,
the program will address two broad areas;

• R&D gaps and

• Knowledge gaps and
• would collaborate with other institutions to address the
skill gaps.

• The 5-year Dual Degree program in Building Science and

Engineering, has been conceived at IIIT-H as an outcome of a
well experimented and thought-out academic endeavor to
create well-qualified, trained manpower and researchers in
this emerging area.
Objectives of BSE Programme
• Motivate researchers and students to undertake inter-
disciplinary research in an integrated and holistic
manner keeping the Indian socio-cultural and
environmental context.

• Conduct Focused research in the frontier areas like

• disaster resistant buildings
• tall buildings
• building automation & green buildings
• asset & facilities management
• city & regional planning
• integrated building design
Objectives of BSE Program…
• Help build knowledge in all components of the building system
including indigenous and modern practices with ability to
interact with various specialists
• Materials
• Services
• Retrofit & repair
• Water & waste management.

• BSE besides contributing to existing codes on RC and Steel, will

also focuses on development of design manuals & codes for
natural materials.
Objectives of BSE Program…
• Students in the graduate program will learn
how to apply scientific methods and state-of-
the-art technologies in order to address the
multi-faceted challenges posed by high
performance and sustainable buildings.
Innovative Curriculum to support the
Research Program
• Covering the basic sciences, core engineering and
computational technologies

• Integrative and cutting-across courses designed

keeping in view of the need to address emerging
challenges through inter-disciplinary and multi-
disciplinary approach
Innovative Curriculum to support the
Research Program
• Opportunity for students to specialize in a Research
Stream with supporting courses in related streams

• A Research component leading to a Masters’ thesis.

• All the courses are based on the central philosophy of

the Institute, the model of “Practice-Theory-Practice”,
which provides as much emphasis on practice as on
theoretical aspects.
