Pastor’s Paragraph
How does God’s kingdom come? Listen to the Scripture readings as you ask that question. Ps 100:3 affirms who
made us in order to make us His people. Romans 5 asserts that God’s kingdom comes in the incarnation. Jesus
Christ reconciled enemies of God to Him as father. In Exodus 19 Moses tells God’s purpose for His people, namely,
to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. And in Psalm 67, the introit gives reason why God made us His people
in vs. 1 and 2: (I don’t know why the Introit fails to include the purpose clause of the Psalm) “May God be gracious
to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us SO THAT your way may be known on earth, your saving
power among all nations.” And the Gospel reading from Matthew 9 teaches how Christ uses His Church in order to
bring God’s kingdom come.
The Lord’s Supper The Sacrament of the Altar is administered in agreement with the Holy Scriptures and the
Lutheran Confessions. It is celebrated in the joyous confidence that the bread and wine are Christ's true Body and
Blood for the forgiveness of our sins. All who commune receive Christ's Body and Blood in this Sacrament, and all
who commune at this altar also declare that they believe the faith confessed in the congregations of the Lutheran
Church - Missouri Synod, thus witnessing to our doctrinal unity. Visitors: If you have not been baptized, instructed
in the Lutheran faith, or hold membership or commune outside the LC-MS, we ask you to refrain from receiving
communion at this time. If you desire to commune, ask the Pastor about taking instruction to prepare you to receive
the Lord’s Supper in agreement with God's Word. Visiting members of Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod
congregations who wish to commune, please let Pastor, an elder or an usher know of your desire to join us for Holy
Communion today. Communicants: please examine your life and faith (1 Corinthians 11:27) as you come to receive
the true body and blood of Jesus for the forgiveness of sins. You may use "Christian Questions and Answers" p. 329
(Lutheran Service Book) for self-examination. Individual confession and absolution is available by appointment.
During this Covid-impacted time: For communion, an usher will direct you to the table in groups of 10. First
arrivals take a place in the back. All communicants remain standing. The pastor will drop the host into your hands. If
you take the individual cup place the empty glass in the tray at the foot of the stairs. If you take the chalice, guide it
to your lips. If you are unable to climb the steps, please sit in the front pews to have communion brought to you.

P Let us pray.
Almighty, eternal God, in the Word of Your apostles and prophets You have proclaimed to us
Your saving will. Grant us faith to believe Your promises that we may receive eternal salvation;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God,
now and forever.
C Amen.
death spread to all men because all sinned— 13for sin indeed was in the world before the law was
given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. 14Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even
over those whose sinning was not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who
was to come.
15But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much
more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded
for many.
P 35Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming
the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36When he saw the
crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without
a shepherd. 37Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few;
38therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.”
1And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast
them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. 2The names of the twelve apostles are
these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and
John his brother; 3Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son
of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
5Thesetwelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no
town of the Samaritans, 6but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7And proclaim as
you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ 8Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers,
cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay. 9Acquire no gold nor silver nor
copper for your belts, 10no bag for your journey, nor two tunics nor sandals nor a staff, for the
laborer deserves his food. 11And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it
and stay there until you depart. 12As you enter the house, greet it. 13And if the house is worthy, let
your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14And if anyone will
not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that
house or town. 15Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of
Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
16“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and
innocent as doves. 17Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their
synagogues, 18and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness
before them and the Gentiles. 19When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to
speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20For it is not
you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”

586 Preach You the Word
Offering Please leave your offering in the offering plate in the back of the sanctuary as you leave.
P Through Him who is the first and the last (Is 44), who shall speak peace to the nations (Zech 9:9), who for
the well-being of the Church of God and for the unity of all will not let His word return to Him empty (Is
55) let us in faith, piety and fear of God come to receive His gifts and praise His Name,
Lord in your mercy, C hear our prayer.
P For our pastor, for all godly pastors and teachers, and for all the people of God who serve God and
neighbor in their various vocations, that we not labor for that which does not satisfy (Is 55), that we count
the sufferings of this present time not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us Rm 8, and
that the seed of the word bear fruit (Mt 13), Lord in your mercy, C hear our prayer.
P We pray that you send laborers into the field, since how are they to believe in him…without someone
preaching? (Rm 10), that by the gospel voice many hear the good news and confess of Jesus, “Truly you
are the Son of God” (Mt 14) Lord in your mercy C hear our prayer.
P Since you, O Lord, are great and most worthy of praise, bring to repentance this nation and all people
from every besetting sin. Grant wisdom and humility to our president and congress, our governor and
legislature, our judges and magistrates and all who serve in public office. Turn judicial decisions so that
they are in harmony with Your order of creation. Restore peace to our cities. Deliver us from anarchy.
Protect our military at home and abroad, and for those having rule and authority among all the nations of
the earth, Lord in your mercy: C Hear our prayer
P For the sick and the sorrowing, for those who mourn, for those in need and distress, for those who
neglect your courts, for those held captive by Satan’s lies, for the homebound and infirm to receive this
invitation: Come to me all who labor and are heavy laden (Mt 11) (and especially those for whom our
prayers have been asked this day, FOR: ); Lord in your mercy, C hear our prayer.
P For those to whom death is drawing near, and for us all, we ask that when our last hour shall come we
may depart this life in the confidence of a sure faith, the consolation of a right, devout, and holy hope,
and in the communion of Christ’s holy Church, confident that in Christ’s righteousness we shall … shine
like the stars (Mt 13) Lord in your mercy, C hear our prayer.
P Since nothing is able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rm 8), we rejoice with
those who have gone before us in the Faith, awaiting to share with them in the Sabbath Rest Christ won
for His people, that He who delivered us from this body of death, Jesus Christ our Lord (Rm 7) will preserve
us in the faith unto the Day of Judgment, to rejoice in the Day of the Resurrection of the dead, Lord in
your mercy, C hear our prayer.
P He who comes in the name of the Lord (Ps. 118:26), Jesus our Great High Priest, You offered Yourself on
the Cross as the Sacrifice for the sins of all the world, deliver to us now through Your Holy Supper the
forgiveness of our sins and the strengthening of our faith that through receiving your body and blood this
day, we may with Your Church throughout the ages proclaim Christ’s death until He comes in glory. Lord
in your mercy, C hear our prayer.
P In Him who works all things together for good (Rm 8), these and whatsoever other things you would
have us ask O Lord God our God, the faithful God (Dt 7), grant unto us for the sake of the bitter sufferings
and death of Jesus Christ, Your only Son, our Lord and Savior, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy
Spirit, ever one God, world without end. C Amen.
P It is truly meet, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to
You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this
day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of
everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we
laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:
Sanctus LSB 195
In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it
to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is
shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of
Me.”
Pax Domini LSB 163
P The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C Amen.

636 Soul, Adorn Yourself with Gladness
5 Jesus, source of lasting pleasure, 6 Jesus, sun of life, my splendor,
Truest friend, and dearest treasure, Jesus, friend of friends, most tender,
Peace beyond all understanding, Jesus, joy of my desiring,
Joy into all life expanding: Fount of life, my soul inspiring:
Humbly now, I bow before You; At Your feet I cry, my maker,
Love incarnate, I adore You; Let me be a fit partaker
Worthily let me receive You Of this blessèd food from heaven,
And, so favored, never leave You. For our good, Your glory, given.
7 Lord, by love and mercy driven, 8 Jesus, bread of life, I pray You,
You once left Your throne in heaven Let me gladly here obey You.
On the cross for me to languish By Your love I am invited,
And to die in bitter anguish, Be Your love with love requited;
To forego all joy and gladness By this Supper let me measure,
And to shed Your blood in sadness. Lord, how vast and deep love’s treasure.
By this blood redeemed and living, Through the gift of grace You give me
Lord, I praise You with thanksgiving. As Your guest in heav’n receive me.
P Let us pray.
We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift,
and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith
toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord,
who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
C Amen.

Given the tragedies of George Floyd’s death (reputably a Christian man) and violent rioting, the following quote
is appropriate:
“Violence never brings permanent peace. It solves no social problems: it merely creates new and more
complicated ones. Violence is impractical because it is a descending spiral ending in destruction for all. It is
immoral because it seeks to humiliate the opponent rather than win his understanding: it seeks to annihilate
rather than covert. Violence is immoral because it thrives on hatred rather than love. It destroys community and
makes brotherhood impossible. It leaves society in monologue rather than dialogue. Violence ends up defeating
itself. It creates bitterness in the survivors and brutality in the destroyers.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
