Assignment

1. Design a roller chain with the following data. Specify the chain size, the sizes and number
of teeth in the sprockets, the number of chain pitches, the centre distance and angle of wrap
of the chain for each sprocket.
Drive type: Hydraulic drive
Driven machine: Rock crusher
Input speed: 600rpm
Input power: 10kW
Nominal output speed: 180 rpm
Number of strands:3
2. A differential band brake has brake drum of diameter 550mm and the maximum torque on
the drum is 1000 N-m. The brake embraces 2/3rd of the circumference. If the band brake is
lined with asbestos fabric having a coefficient of friction 0.3, then design the steel band. The
permissible stress is 70 MPa in tension. The bearing pressure for the brake lining should not
exceed 0.2 MPa.
3. A double shoe brake has diameter of brake drum 350mm and contact angle of each shoe
90 degrees, as shown in figure below. If the coefficient of friction for the brake lining and the
drum is 0.4, find the spring force necessary to transmit a torque of 40 Nm. Also determine the
width of the brake shoe if the braking pressure on the lining material is not to exceed 0.28
MPa.

4. A plate clutch consists of 1 pair of contacting surfaces. The inner and outer diameter of the
friction disk is 150mm and 250mm respectively. The coefficient of friction is 0.2 and
permissible intensity of pressure is 1.5N/mm². Assuming uniform wear theory, calculate the
operating force and torque transmitting capacity of the clutch.

5. Select a belt from Dunlop high speed for power transmission of 15 kW from motor pulley
running at 1440 rpm to machine pulley at 480 rpm. Centre distance between the pulleys is
2.4m. Velocity of the belt can be taken from 14-16m/s. Service factor as 1.2. Power
transmission from high speed belt is 0.0118kW per mm width per ply at V=5m/s. Take open
belt drive system.
6.A cone clutch is to be designed to transmit 55kW at 1200 rpm. Determine the main
dimensions of the clutch and the axial force required to engage the clutch from the following
data: Ratio of mean diameter to face width = 5, Face angle of the cone = 15 ◦, Normal pressure
between contact faces = 0.1 MPa, Coefficient of friction = 0.3
7.A 25 kW motor running at 1200 rpm drives a compressor at 780 rpm through a 90º bevel
gearing arrangement. The pinion has 30 teeth. The pressure angle of the teeth is 20º. Both the
pinion and the gear are made of heat-treated cast-iron grade 35. Determine the cone distance,
average module and face width of the gears.
8.Design a worm - gear speed reducer for transmitting 6 KW at 960 rpm of the worm with a
transmission ratio of 15. Allowable variation of ratio is + 3%. Load almost constant. Rating is
continuous. Reducer is used to operate a transporter in a furnace which is to work for 2 shift /
day, 310 days per year and for 2 years.
9.A 12 speed gear boxes are to be designed for a machine tool with a step ratio of 1.4. The
maximum output speed is to be 1000 rpm. Power to be transmitted is 5 KW. (i) Draw the
layout of gears (ii) Draw the speed diagram (iii) Determine the number of teeth of
gears(iv)Calculate module and centre distance for all stages.
