SUMMARY

During the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the article explained an
evidence-based approach for improving infection control and operating room management.
Confirmed modes of viral transmission are mainly, but not exclusively, contact with contaminated
environmental surfaces and aerosolization. A combination of deep cleaning with surface
disinfectants and ultraviolet light (UV-C) involves evidence-based improvement strategies to
attenuate residual environmental contamination. There are eight comprehensive recommendations
of scientific evidence characterizing the epidemiology of perioperative transmission and infection
development made possible by the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation support in which includes
of the following; hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, patient decolonization, vascular care and
surveillance. It also includes the operating room management strategies during the COVID-19 crisis.

REACTION

In this pandemic caused by COVID-19 disease, nurses and doctors have become the
frontlines that are dealing directly with patients with COVID-19 and are at an increased risk of
becoming infected because the essence of their job places them and other health care workers at a
bigger risk of contracting any communicable disease, including COVID-19. It is indeed necessary to
establish hospital-specific guidelines to minimize the probability of infection for COVID-19 patients,
much as the article I searched for.

As a student nurse, one of the things most taught in our class is the maintenance of neatness
and sterility when it comes to hospital settings, and in every day purpose as well. Considering now
that we are in the middle of a pandemic and in third year level, this concept is essential for us
because supposedly by now, we are exposing our duties in the operating room. This is the time we
must learn more about the OR procedures and management such as the basic principles, enhance
our critical thinking and skills, infection control, etc. Having this in mind, it is also necessary to
improve our communication with our team in order to be able to manage the right procedure within
the OR.

This journal reading has led me into ideas about what to expect inside the operating
room. I look forward in dealing on actual cases inside the OR and extending my knowledge in doing
what I like to do. But for the time being, all I can do is learn more in this class first, and by the time
we get back on duty, I will be able to apply my learning in the area.
