258 schools in Region 1 allocate TSS – Tello

“…With ESC participating schools, with TSS (Teachers’ Salary Subsidy), this is the
teacher salary subsidy; number of schools, we have 258,” said Daisy Tello, Department of
Education (DepEd) Region 1 Coordinator, during the Private Education Assistance
Committee Region 1 Assembly at the Father Burgos Gymnasium in Saint Louis College,
August 28.

The TSS is a program where subsidy is annually provided by the government to


qualified teachers in Education Service Contracting (ESC)-participating junior high schools.

“As of August 15, there were 136 private schools that were approved of tuition
increase; while 258 schools did not increase,” said Tello.

She gave updates on private school matters including the process of approving
tuition and other school fees.

She also talked about the Government Assistance to Students and Teachers in
Private Education program, elaborating on the guidelines of the JHS Education ESC
program, and Senior High School Voucher Program (SHSVP).

For the school year 2018-2019, there were 60,580 grantees of the ESC, 3,601
recipients of the SHSVP in the region and TSS offered to teachers as incentive.

Joey Pimentel, another DepEd official, then talked about Basic Education Data in
Private Schools.

Pimentel discussed that in the region, there are a total of 171,865 K to 12 students
enrolled in 596 schools.

He also stated that the National Achievement Test taken by Grade 12 students
during the school year 2018-2019 resulted to low proficiency.

Attendees were delegates from Alaminos, Dagupan, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La
Union, Laoag, Pangasinan 1 and 2, San Carlos, San Fernando, Urdaneta, and Vigan.
