NĀ WĀHINE I KA NĀHELE

ALOHA GIRLS IN THE

WILDERNESS!

I was just looking at my calendar this week

and thinking about how much I would love to
be up at Kokee with you! Instead I am staying
busy at Pilina, getting ready to breed Pili and
playing around with our new little goat Hiwa
(who is Hina's granddaughter) who will be our
next milking doe here on the farm.

The garden is going great, and my daughter
Maeve has been helping me plant a LOT this
spring. We have beets, fennel, kale, tomatoes,
swiss chard, edamame, peas, and tons of herbs
and flowers growing! The bees are super excited,
and this past spring we captured a swarm from
a friend's house up in Manoa, so now we have
two busy hives at Pilina Farms. I should be able
to do a honey harvest later this summer by
the looks of things.

We also recently got 10(!) new baby chicks this

spring. They are growing sooooo big; they are all
kinds of different colors and so cute. They
should start laying by late September, and I can't
wait to have fresh eggs from the farm again.

A former student also just gave me a batch of

her sourdough starter, so I've been baking bread
with natural yeasts. It is SO delicious. I can eat
half a loaf all by myself. It's going to be even
better with honey all over it!

Note: On our website is the recipe for Ms.

Lathropʻs ʻono bread!

My big project this summer was
building a clothesline in my
backyard. Last year on my
sabbatical I lived in Maine next
door to my sister. Her family
dries all their clothes on a line
(even in the winter!) and it
inspired me to do this as well. I
actually look forward to doing
laundry now, and I love taking
my clothes and sheets off the
line, all warm from the sun!

When I'm not at the farm, I've

been super excited to get into
the ocean. I have been going out ULU A'E KE WELINA A KE
long boarding in Waikiki, dawn
patrol, and started boogie

working with all of you so
much. Iʻm hoping we will get to
do some projects on campus - MANULANI ALULI MEYER
soon, but in the mean time...

I hope you all are well, and that

you are finding adventures and
sharing your aloha everywhere
you go!
