The Trained Nurses' Association of India (TNAI)

The Association had its beginning in the Association of Nursing Superintendents
which was founded in 1905, at Lucknow
At the Annual Conference held in Bombay in 1908, a decision was taken to establish
Trained Nurses’ Association. The Association was inaugurated in 1909.
In 1922, the Association of Nursing Superintendents and Trained Nurses’
Association were amalgamated and called The Trained Nurses’ Association of India
(TNAI).
The Association has established within its jurisdiction the following organisations :
Health Visitors’ League (1922) Midwives and Auxiliary Nurse-Midwives Association
(1925) Student Nurses Association (1929-30).
In 1974 the TNAI became a member of the Commonwealth Nurses Federation
(CNF).

Establishment and Formation (TNAI)

The Association had its beginning in the Association of Nursing Superintendents

which was founded in 1905, at Lucknow. The organisation was composed of nine
European Nurses holding administrative posts in hospitals.

Like their counterparts in other countries, this small band of women was imbued with
vision and a pioneering spirit. They saw the need to develop Nursing as a profession
and also to provide a forum where professional Nurses could meet and plan to
achieve these ends. The movement gathered momentum and soon Nurses, other
than Nursing Superintendents, were seeking to share in:
 
 upholding in every way the dignity and honour of the Nursing profession;
 promoting a sense of esprit de corps among all Nurses; and

 enabling members to take counsel together on matters relating to their

profession.

The Association of Nursing Superintendents, therefore, sought the help and co-
operation of Nurses throughout the country. At the Annual Conference held in
Bombay in 1908, a decision was taken to establish Trained Nurses’ Association. The
Association was inaugurated in 1909. The two organisations shared the same officers
until 1910 when, at the first Trained Nurses’ Association (TNA) Conference, held at
Banaras (UP), the TNA members elected their own officers.

In 1922, the Association of Nursing Superintendents and Trained Nurses’ Association

were amalgamated and called The Trained Nurses’ Association of India (TNAI).

The Association has established within its jurisdiction the following organisations:

 Health Visitors’ League (1922)

 Midwives and Auxiliary Nurse-Midwives Association (1925)

 Student Nurses Association (1929-30)

In 1912 the TNAI got affiliated with the International Council of Nurses (ICN). The
TNAI along with various responsibilities as a member had participated in the ICN
Nursing Abroad Programme since 1950. Under this scheme a number of TNAI
members had been placed in institutions abroad to obtain clinical experience on an
"earn and learn" basis. A number of placements had been effected in Indian hospitals
for Nurses from abroad. Professional visits were also arranged for Nurses visiting the
country.

However, due to paucity of funds it became difficult to pay the heavy subscription
and TNAI stands disaffiliated from the ICN since May 1995.

In 1974 the TNAI became a member of the Commonwealth Nurses Federation (CNF).
The association with CNF has been fruitful in many ways. Mrs. Reena Bose, the first
Vice President TNAI has taken over as President CNF as an uncontested candidate.
 

Revision of TNAI Membership Fee

As Follow-Up to the decision of TNAI Council,The Membership Fees Shall be

revised upwards from 1 April, 2009 as Under:

 The application form will be accepted only when it is recommended by

the Nursing Superintendent/Principal/ Director of Nursing/Principal
Tutor or any senior member of TNAI.

 In case the recommendation from anyone of the above mentioned

 persons is not possible, true attested copies of Registration Certificates
must be sent alongwith the application form.

 A current member desiring to become a Life Member need not send

fresh application. The applicant should intimate his/her TNAI number
and remit the life membership fee.

 Application form completed in all respects should be sent to the

Secretary, TNAI, L-17, Green Park, New Delhi-11 0016, along with the
membership fee.

 The Nursing Journal of India (official organ of TNAI) is issued to the

members free of cost. Members migrating/residing in foreign countries
shall bear the postal charges apart from memberships fee.

 Any change in Present/Mailing address, should be intimated

immediately quoting TNAI number, and Pin Code to ensure regular
supply of N.J.I.

A National Workshop on “Management Skills in Nursing: Series-XXII, theme:
“Human Relations and Communication Skills in Nursing Service” will be held from
September 2-9, 2009 at TNAI Headquarters, L-17, Florence Nightingale Lane, Green
Park, New Delhi-110016. The overall purpose of the workshop is to update the
knowledge and skills of the nurse professionals working at various levels of health
care settings, on the aspects of human relations and communication skills for
effective and efficient patient care. Request for registration will be considered on a
first-cum-first serve basis as there are only limited seats 40. All costs for attending
the Workshop will be borne by the sponsoring authorities (Institutions/Governments)
or by concerned individuals as the case may be.

Total participation fee:

(1) Outstation participants those who require accommodation Rs. 13,000.00
(fee package for Registration, Boarding and lodging for 8 days including Sunday)
(2) Local participants those who do not require accommodation Rs. 6,400.00
(fee package for Registration, lunch and refreshment) for 7 days

Registration Fee is not refundable. In case of cancellation only boarding and lodging
charges are refundable as per appended rates. One month in advance –75%; 15
days in advance – 50% and no refund thereafter.

No TNAI member from States except those accompanying the students are required
to attend the Conference.

The Charges are payable in advance and should be sent by Demand Draft drawn in

Conference Registration Chairperson latest by September 15, 2009. Late
Registration Fee will be charges after September 15, 2009.

Due to accommodation constraints SNA members’ participation is restricted to three

members from each SNA Unit, SNA Unit Advisor, Vice President and Secretary and
students taking part in Exhibition, Competition, making presentations at the Plenary
Sessions and ANM programme. However, there is no restriction for the local SNA
Members provided appropriate adjustment is made with the Conference Organizors.

It is regretted that no accommodation arrangements will be possible for members

accompanied by families/friends/relations. They will have to make arrangements on
their own. However, they may get information about accommodation facilities
available in the city by writing to the (Chairperson, Registration Committee).
