SMARTAGE PROJECTS presents GRP Panel Water

Tanks Manufactured by POTAGLAS TANK, Malaysia.

INTRODUCTION

WATER, is an essential resource. Therefore, storage of clean, potable water for extended periods remains a top
priority. The solution - GRP water tanks can have storage capacity from 5 thousand to 5 million liters.

POTAGLAS TANK SDN BHD’s water tanks, constructed from Glassfibre Reinforced Polyester (GRP) panels,
fulfill this requirement. Supported by technology from BRIDGESTONE CORPORATION of Japan and using the
technically advanced Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) production method, the GRP panels are
dimensionally accurate, uniformly strong and extremely durable under all weather conditions.

Until the introduction of GRP as a viable water storage medium, concrete and steel sectional tanks have been
widely used on such applications as housing complexes, industrial developments, buildings, hospitals, rural
and urban water reservoirs and other facilities. The use of concrete and steel, however have their own
particular disadvantages.
Steel for example, corrodes very easily - particularly in coastal environments and therefore is difficult to
maintain, and requires frequent re-painting. In Concrete tanks, the quality of construction can vary
significantly since it is labor intensive, and concrete tanks have a tendency to crack. Small cracks can lead to
seepage and the possible contamination of the water. Concrete surfaces are also rough and may allow micro-
organisms to grow on the surface. Once cracks appear in the concrete, it is difficult to rectify. In severe cases,
fracture of the tank may occur which could cause the possible loss of the use of the tank.

These problems can be avoided by using HOT PRESSED GRP/SMC PANELS which provide very uniform, strong
and stable construction

ADVANTAGES OF GRP OVER CONCRETE TANKS:

- Fast construction due to modular design, durable tanks

- Weight is considerably less compared to concrete (1/10th weight)
- Flexible shapes possible, with partitions to store different
types of water in the same tank
- Leakages are rare, and if any, they are easy to attend and rectify
- Capacity can be enhanced at a later date if required, easy maintenance
- Base panel design allows complete drainage for maintenance
- Smooth surface discourages growth of micro-organisms and dirt

STANDARDS AND SPECIFICATIONS

TUV SUD PSB Singapore, and The Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) has certified
POTAGLAS GRP panels to SS245:1995 "Specifications for Glassfibre Reinforced Polyester Sectional Water
Tank". In addition, Potaglas Tank Sdn Bhd and SIRIM, in a joint research project, have subjected POTAGLAS GRP
panels to 'accelerated weathering' tests. During the test, the GRP panels are subjected to 4000 hours of
simulated rain, sunlight and UV rays and the results as shown in the table below. In these tests, POTAGLAS GRP
panels maintained their structural integrity for about fifteen years of simulated service life, in tropical
conditions, duly demonstrating their long term durability.

OPTIMUM STRUCTURE DESIGN

Structural Analysis using Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to test the design of panel as well as the
reinforcement system.

TANK CONSTRUCTION

SMC Hot Press moulding technology at 140 degrees heat and high pressure creates strong, uniform and stable
panels. These panels are then assembled at site, along with the reinforcement system (INTERNAL TIE ROD or
EXTERNAL REINFORCEMENT), foam sealant, roof supports and accessories.

POTAGLAS GRP panels have passed WRAS - Effect on Water Quality - BS6920; hence able to store clean
potable drinking water

SHAPE FLEXIBILITY AND INSTALLATION

GRP Panel Tanks are flexible in shape. This is useful to accommodate the tank in odd shaped locations and
get the maximum capacity.
Since the tank is transported in disassembled condition, no special equipment is needed to mobilize the
tank to the correct location at site. On site, our trained teams perform the installation, fixing of flanges and
testing (Visual Non Leak Test)

BASE PANEL DESIGNED FOR DRAINAGE

Design of the base panels and drain panels is such that it

allows complete drainage of the tank for maintenance.
This avoids stagnant water, and allows the tank to be
thoroughly and quickly cleaned for maintenance.

ELEVATED WATER TANK ON STEEL TOWER

GRP water tanks can also easily be installed

on steel towers which consist of truss and lattice
type construction.

Our proposed structures are recommended for

certain extreme conditions. Lighter structures
may be utilized under other operating conditions.

CERTIFICATIONS

POTAGLAS GRP Panel tanks have been approved by several certification bodies. Manufacturing and Supply
is ISO 9001:2008 certified.
