Dr. Overmyer earned her medical degree
at Wayne State University in Detroit.
She completed her residency in the
Grand Rapids Family Medicine
Residency Program. She is a clinical
associate professor at Michigan State
University and is a member of both the
Michigan and American Academies of Family Physicians.
Dr. Overmyer’s professional interests encompass women’s health and
preventive care as well as adolescent and pediatric medicine. She has
completed research on adolescent high risk behavior and depression, and
while working in Grand Rapids, one of her chief volunteer activities was
conducting high school sports physicals.
A graduate of Mason County Central High School, Dr. Overmyer is
pleased to be back “home” to establish her medical practice and raise her
family. She and her husband, Jeremy, have two sons, ages two and four.

People often think
that those of us who work
in the media don’t have
feelings when it comes to
certain stories we report
on, but the truth of the
matter is we do react the
same way as others to
certain events.

This weekend one
story that left me feeling like I was kicked
in the stomach was the news of the tragic
shooting in Tuscon, Ariz. That was where
a single gunman killed six people, and
wounded 14 others including Democratic
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. One of
the victims killed was a 9-year-old girl and
in my opinion, anyone who can’t feel some- vocally provide an alternative view, but do

Disagreement of political issues is some- backed down from a good debate in those
thing that can be traced to the first days of
Democracy. For most of us, the ability “to
agree to disagree” and then move on never
goes beyond that point.
Political debate in its purest sense is not seldom became mean spirited, and he never
a bad thing. Putting out ideas and pointing
out the merits or downsides to them can be
a healthy process of government.
However, what we have witnessed more when it got close to being much more than
in the past few years is often an obsession
with “my way is the only way” line of think- just from a view of society, but from some-
ing from some political figures and their
cult-like followers.
That is wrong.
That is what creates what happened last ric we hear spouting from the mouths of
Saturday in Tuscon.
Someone asked me if I was surprised at
the news of the shooting, and to be quite
honest my answer is, no. I find it repre-
hensible, but it doesn’t surprise me that we
finally dropped to that level as a society.
Last fall in Big Rapids, we witnessed
what in my opinion was a very disturbed
Michigan State University student push a
cherry pie in Michigan Sen. Carl Levin’s
face. Yes, it was just a pie, but it could
have easily been a gun in her hand as she
approached him.
And why?
Because you don’t agree with a person’s
political views?

in public, and that more

hope it doesn’t come to that as it is impor-
tant for politician’s to have interactions
with their constituents. It is a vital part of
the governing process because they are the
voice of the people.
You have two options if you don’t agree
with some politicians views. The first is to
it in a civil manner. The second is if you
want to remove them from office then do so
at the voting booth — not with a weapon.
In an ironic twist of fate, last week
I interviewed our former Congressman
Pete Hoekstra who is stepping down after
Lifestyles story this Saturday was his abil-
ity to debate with the public in forums and
town hall meetings. He stressed to me how
important that was to him to hear the dif-
One of the things I always admired
about Hoekstra was his “man in the arena”
approach to politics in his district. He
always wanted to hear what the constitu-
ents had to say about the issues, and never
meetings.
He pointed out that in his 18 years in
office, people would often disagree with
his beliefs. However, he quickly added they
felt threatened.
What concerns me is there were a few
times I covered some of those meetings
just spirited debate. That is scary to me, not
one who actually has to sit in that room.
Something that plants the seeds in the
minds of the mentally unstable is the rheto-
politicians, political analysts and the media.
They often give the impression that “all is
lost” if a certain legislation passes or fails,
and the opposing political party isn’t just
the opposition — they are the enemy.
It is time for the great silent majority
of this country to step forward and voice
its opinion in this matter and to say that
behavior of this kind will not be tolerated
from our politicians, political analysts, the
media and the public. Until that majority
speaks up in a loud and clear voice it isn’t
going to stop.

direction by the time I...
