Core Competencies For Ecoliteracy & Sustainability
The Center for Ecoliteracy has developed a set of ‘core competencies’ to help young people develop and
live in sustainable communities. These competencies relate to the head (learning to know), the heart
(learning to be), the hands (learning to do) and the spirit (learning to live together).
• Think critically, solve problems creatively, and apply knowledge to new situations
• Assess the impacts and ethical effects of human technologies and actions
• Feel concern, empathy, and respect for other people and living things
• See from and appreciate multiple perspectives; work with and value others with different backgrounds,
motivations, and intentions
• Create and use tools, objects, and procedures required by sustainable communities
• Turn convictions into practical and effective action, and apply ecological knowledge to the practice of
ecological design
• Feel kinship with the natural world and invoke that feeling in others
Ecoliteracy must become a critical skill for politicians, business leaders and professionals, and should be
the most important part of education at all levels
• We now are at a critical point with many issues, such as climate change, biodiversity, deforestation
• Ecoliteracy is imperative for political and business leaders, as well as in all levels of the education
system
The development of ecological understanding is not simply another subject to be learnt but a fundamental

Key challenge: • Ecoliteracy is difficult to teach – many teachers do not have this level of expertise
Key lessons: • Simple themes of ecology can be woven into a general curriculum
