The Good Distraction

Purpose Statement
To identify and lay down our service that keeps us from true relationship with Jesus

Introduction

Preaching Portion
[Luk 10:38-42 NKJV]

38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman named
Martha welcomed Him into her house.

39 And she had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet and heard His word.

40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, "Lord, do You not
care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Therefore tell her to help me."

41 And Jesus answered and said to her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and troubled about many
things.

42 "But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from
her."

This story is loaded with crucial knowledge for operating in God’s Kingdom.

1. The characters in the story

How do you relate with the characters

 Martha
o Doer, shows her love through serving
o She invited Jesus into her house
o She knew who Jesus was. The Son of God.
o Had an idea of how she planned to serve Him
o Felt responsible to serve Him in this way she had planned
 Mary
o ALSO sat at Jesus feet. She might have also served but spend some time with Jesus
o She did not feel the same sense of responsibility Martha felt
o She understood that she had a chance to be with Jesus while He was visiting
 Jesus
o Jesus’ reason for accepting the invite was not to be served but to have fellowship
 We often exchange fellowship for serving
 Remember that good service is not the main outcome of fellowship, but
touching hearts is
o He did not stop Martha while she was serving, but wanted for her to come to Him
 Often at these breaking points where Jesus wants to meet us and where we
realize the truth

2. Forms of Service we do
 Serving in church instead of Worship
 Working hard for your family instead of taking the time to love them
 Preparing food for friends at a braai instead of sitting and connecting
o Only small talking
 Doing deep scientific research to prove the big bang
 It’s all forms of distraction, distracting us from the truth.

3. Why do we serve?
 It is easier to serve than to change
 When we are faced with Jesus we are faced with the truth
o Truth sometimes hurt
o We are comfortable to serve hard rather than change
 Reality – our serving will die with us, but the good part will last forever

4. We have a choice!
 Like Jesus mentioned that Mary chose, we can also choose.
 Living our lives right is not hard, it’s simply a choice to accept God’s grace
