Optimization Strategies for

Musculoskeletal Health

This paper provides a re ection on the strategies for
optimizing musculoskeletal health in the 21st century. I
got the interest to write a thought for this because I can
personally relate to this, and gain knowledge from this. I
also want others to have ideas about this topic. Our
world, especially our country, has an increasing rate of
aged people. Increasing age comes from increasing
problems and diseases. In the article, the author cited
strategies that may help improve musculoskeletal health.
And I would like to help spread the ideas mentioned in the
report. The author gained the required information
through a two-day multidisciplinary, international
workshop. That is where I have taken the source or
purpose for this re ection. The disease mentioned in the
article was arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders.
I am hoping that this re ection will provide others with
additional knowledge, which will give them ideas on
improving the care for the elderly. Especially student
2
nurses that will take care of old people in the future. I

associated the theory of Goal Attainment of Imogene M.
King with the issue presented in the article. Body: On the
study of Rebecca Lewis, Constanza B. Gomez Alvarez,
Margaret Rayman, Susan Lanham-Neo, Anthony Woolf,
and Ali Mobasheri (2019). They have stated facts about
the UK and its people. UK government has extended the
working years of people. They delayed the age, the elderly

that can receive pensions. This is due to the increased
pension costs and the increase in the number of older
people. As far as I can remember, the optional retirement
age in the Philippines was 60 years old. It was on the
Economics subject that we had discussed the matter.
Moving on, as I have observed, elderlies with age 60 are
still active and can even do a lot of work. Of course, we
5 6
can't really say that they are still as healthy and as busy
as us youngsters. However, a lot of people ages 60 and
above are still working. Because even if their daughters
and sons already have their own family, they always
5
provide for them. And that's what makes Filipinos
amazing. As I have said, increasing age comes with
increasing problems to health. Extending the working
period of people will be very crucial for those who already

have issues. According to Lewis et al. (2019), ages 60 and

7
above will already have more morbidities. And obviously,
with aged people, the most common problems would be
the ones related to musculoskeletal. The advancements
in our technology are one of the factors that contribute to
the musculoskeletal problem. We do fewer physical
activities because we are becoming more dependent on
these advancements. We know aging is inevitable, but
issues related to age can be avoided or lessen.
Physical exercise can help optimize musculoskeletal
health. Elderlies tend to lose muscle strength and mass,
8
but through training, this can be treated. On the other
hand, obesity is a factor that contributes to this problem.
These problems include diabetes, which will soon lead to
osteoarthritis. The diagnostic tools mentioned in the
article were often not available in other countries like
9
ours. Or in some cases, they are too expensive, which only
rich people can afford. The author included radiography,
biomarkers, imaging techniques like magnetic resonance
imaging. The authors also have mentioned ways of
10
managing musculoskeletal diseases. This includes advice
on diets and lifestyle. However, we all know that this does

not actually treat these diseases. They have also
suggested medications, but these also have limitations.
Musculoskeletal disorder is complex and hard to resolve
problems. But it can be lessened if people take a healthy
lifestyle and physical exercise seriously. The article
12
provided many ways, but they are obviously expensive.
Awareness of the risk factors and prevention, for me, is
5
the best remedy. Imogene M. King’s Theory of Goal
Attainment can be used to achieve this. Where the
healthcare providers and the elderly communicate. They
will set goals like having exercises and giving awareness
of how important a healthy lifestyle is. Through that, I
think they could achieve the goals, which is the
optimization of musculoskeletal health.
