Portfolio Artifact: Can O' Your Town Soup Reflection

Learned: This was a little more sentimental than I anticipated. I was very
fond of the idea to create a label of my hometown and all the things that I
hold near to my childhood memories. My dad used to be a commercial
fisherman so crabbing, lobstering and boating were our norms along with
other beachcombers and boaters. When you picture New york this is
probably the last thing you would visualize.

Application of Skills Learned for the Future:

I think that this project will bring that element of surprise for all students and
be a great get to know you activity in the beginning of the year. Students
could choose to pick their home town or a place that they have visited over
the summer. As an extension of this activity a bulletin board with all the
labels could decorate the classroom. Then an ongoing scavenger hunt
could be conducted to find out fun facts about peers from a class generated
survey. This would be ongoing fun and a great way to connect. I also like
the idea of students using books to introduce a new theme, literature study
and or unit. Students could take books that integrate, but that they have
interest. Students could then recreate the cover and add a review, list
vocabulary, summarize and construct an MLA citation. This will be a great
way for others to be oriented with supporting literature.
