Basketball
Basketball was born as a response to the need for some sporting activity
during the winter in the northern United States. In 1891, James
Naismith, a professor at Springfield University (Massachusetts), was
given the task of devising a sport that could be played indoors, since
winters in that area made it difficult to play outdoors.

Basketball was an exhibition sport in the 1928 Olympic Games and

1932 Olympic Games, reaching Olympic status in the 1936 Olympic
Games. Here Naismith had the opportunity to see his creation
converted into an Olympic category, when he was accompanied by
Adolf Hitler in the box of honor, in Germany. Women's basketball had
to wait until 1976 for its admission as an Olympic sport.
