Make some notes that that you can answer these questions:
1. What are the three main layers of rock that are found on Mount Everes
Gray limestone
Yellow band
Granite
2. What were the risks in collecting the samples?
Having to climb the moution at 12000 feet lots of glacier ice threating to collapse on him
Wind reacjing speeds of over 100 mph and temptures under 40 degrees
At the top the air is 3x thinner
1 in 10 people die climbing mount everest

3. What evidence exists to prove that this rock was formed under the oceans?
There are fossils such as sea lillys in the rocks on the summit indicating that it was under water millions of
years ago.

Task 2:
Watch the documentary below starting from 16 minutes. Take notes on the 6 stages outlined below to
explain how Everest has formed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UK1XYcwEU2c&feature=emb_logo

Stage 1 - Continental Drift - India on the Move (16:00 - 16:51)

88 millions years ago india left Gondwana

55millin years ago india hit asia
India travlled 4000 milles in 30 million years which is very fast in geo time
This fast movement is ine if the reasons why the Himalayas are huge
Stage 2 - Crashing & Folding (17:15 - 19:46)
400 MILLIONS YEARS AGO A WIDE OCEAN EXISTED WHERE THE HIMALAYAS NOW EXIST.
INDA WAS PART OF GONDAWALAND UNTILL 80 MILLIONS OF YEARS AGO WHEN TETONIC PLATES BROKE UP
THE SUPER CONTIENT 50 MILLIONS YEARS AGO INDIA COLLIDED WITH ASIA THIS SMASJ CREATED THE
Himalayas
Traces of this can still be seen
When india and asia collided the land and ocean floor that lay between latterly folded up under the
enormous pressure however folds are only part of the story.

Stage 3 - Folding & Thrusting (19:46 - 22:30)

Once the rock can no longer fold it once its beyond its limit it breaks and causes a fault the process puts diffent
rocky types on top of each other.
This leaves the diffent layers of rock on mount everest

Stage 4 - Growing Pains - The Quakes

(27:55 - 31:30)
Stage 5 - Monsoon & Glaciers - Cutting Everest Down? (31:43 - 34.55)

Finally- Is Everest shrinking or growing? (36:55 37:50)
