Implicit meaning: setting (1)

Task: Change the ‘happy’ atmosphere of this piece of writing – first to ‘miserable’, then to ‘scary’ – by
altering the words and phrases that have been underlined.
Happy
I looked up at the shining sun in the sky and, feeling happiness deep in my heart, laughed out loud.  The
trees swayed gently, birds sang from the branches, and I felt a warm glow envelop me.  I began to walk
lazily through the forest, smiling at the beauty that surrounded me. Pausing at the bank of a stream,
gazed at the glistening waters before jumping lightly to the other side.  I found myself in a field of bluebells
and a soft aroma drifted to my nose.  As my mind filled with peace, I reclined on the ground and drifted
into sleep.

Miserable

I looked up at the tree branches silhouetting the moon in the sky and, feeling a sensation of gloom
deep in my heart, whimpered softly. The trees stood firmly rooted, owl stared right through my eyes
from the branches, and I felt a wave of nausea envelop me.  I began to stroll along with
despair through the forest, ignoring the distress that surrounded me. Halting at the bank of a stream, I
stared at the gooey smelling sewage waters before whooshing rapidly to the other side. I found myself
in a field of rotten tomatoes and a stinking aroma wafted past my nose.  As my mind filled with
disastrous anguish, I sprawled onto the ground and lost consciousness.

Scary

I looked up at the eerie blue moon in the sky and, feeling uncanny deep in my heart, screamed out
loud.  The trees stood still as a statue, bats swinging upside down from the branches, and I felt a wave
of queasiness envelop me.  I began to creep cautiously through the forest, petrified at the terror that
surrounded me. Stumbling at the bank of a stream, I glanced at the placid emerald waters before
whirling swiftly to the other side.  I found myself in a field of dead bodies and a putrid aroma drifted
past my nose.  As my mind filled with horror, I hid behind the bushes in the ground and taking deep
breath.
