Dear Tutor and Classmates

Identify the challenges to implement Total Quality Management in


education.

TQM (Total Quality Management) is developed for business so some educators


don’t agree that TQM could be applied in higher education. TQM is a philosophy
implemented by industries and they have a different structure from the
education system. Terms such as empowerment, strategy, reengineering don't
correspond to education so it could be considered that TQM can't be applied in
education. Another difficulty to apply TQM in education is the insufficient trust
between collaborators and faculty of the members because of Lack of
organizational culture the result is a low level of ability to manage the process.
Lack of commitment by the management and especially from teachers due to
they would have extra documentation and they won't accept to increase their
duties. Also, resistance from professors could come because TQM process is
applied in education because it is considered just a business for the
management section of the school. Defining who are considered clients and
evaluating the results are two challenges of implementing TQM in education
because there is a wide list of possible clients (such as students, parents,
researchers, alumni, commercial companies, etc.) that may vary, in initial
education parents are costumers and children are the consumers in higher
education students can be both and if it there is scholarship students sponsors
are considered costumers. Evaluating TQM could be difficult due TQM requires
that students work as members of the ‘teamwork’ and this could be a challenge
because some students do not even care about their education, therefore, they
will not be part of this process that needs the support of all the stakeholders.

 In your opinion, is it possible to implement TQM in the Ecuadorian public


education? 

Personally I am not sure that TQM can be applied to education in Ecuador, the
reason is because both public and private institutions must comply with the
guidelines of the Ministry of Education and their curriculum. Education in
Ecuador based on the standard of the Ministry of Education has not had any
significant change that shows that any quality process has been applied, rather
it has regressed, despite the fact that in their reports of the Ministry of Education
mention that quality is part of their process. On the other hand, private
institutions may have more possibilities of using TQM processes, but this
requires an additional cost that would increase the value of the school monthly
fee and very few people would be able to access this education and this would
also be a problem to create. a successful TQM.
Yes, it is possible but it is necessary to make a great analysis for designing a
plan at long term.

It is difficult to change the mind of the people in our country for cultural
situations, but it can be worked with children, where they need to be taught in
the importance of a good education not only for them but also for the
development of country. It is matter of education from basic education until
university.

Authorities need to review the structure of the Education in the country, since
the Minister of Education and after that in every educational institution. The
institutions must to work in order to get the objectives established for the
development of the country and based on those objectives, focus the process of
education in the classrooms.

It is necessary a constant process of evaluation in every school, high school


and university, in order to identify what are the problems which don’t let to
achieve the goals established totally. It is necessary to review the number of
students in each career in order that the careers which are saturated limit their
quotes, in addition, more than academic evaluation for joining the universities, is
better to take a test in order to identify the abilities of each student and focus on
those abilities for giving them a guide of which career is better suitable and
could success in the future without problems.

The implementation of TQM as in every field, it is not easy, but with a good
teamwork focused in the objectives of the country for it development than
personal interest guided for corruption, TQM in education will let to bring a
service (education) which can challenge with the best educational institutions of
other countries.

I agree with the intervention of Andrea Naranjo according to the application of total quality
management in Ecuador that minister of Education must accomplish in public and private
educational institution and the feasibility to develop those processes, on the other hand,
Jefferson Molina said that Authorities need to structure the Education in our country, establish
objectives focused in-process and It is the necessary constant evaluation to achieve goals and
finally attack the corruption from the root, and have more independent authorities.
