Case 1
Mr. Santos considers his present dilemma a “fortunate problem”. Every year, for the
past five years, his company’s market share is increasing by at least 10%. Profit has
consistently increased which they put back into the business to further improve their
facilities. It was a turnaround from a dismal performance after Mr. Santos assumed the
post from the previous administration. Before Mr. Santos took office, low occupancy
rates were experienced then leading to miserable market share and profit. Complaints
of customers then focused on the lack of amenities and poor maintenance of the hotel.
Immediately after he assumed the post, as the Chief Operating Officer of this low-cost
hotel, significant positive reforms and changes happened. The hotel was swamped by
visitors and customers experiencing 100% occupancy rates almost every weekend,
especially during holidays. After five years, expansion is entailed. As he studied their
finances, internal sourcing will not suffice. Capital infusion is key. However, the Board of
Trustees made it clear that they have nothing to infuse into the company. Neither do
they want to add more investors into the company.
One board of trustee’s member suggested, “Why not increase your fees?” Since our
hotel provides one of the lowest if not the lowest prices among the hotels here?” Mr.
Santos humbly responded, “Sir, with due respect, I have fears that a change in pricing
will need a really huge increase in price levels to answer the additional rooms that the
hotel badly need. A minimal increase will not suffice. This, in turn, might lead to a shift in
target market of the firm. A shift in target market will not immediately result to the new
target market availing our services immediately. There might be a ‘wait and see’ attitude
first. Given our meager operational funds, we may not be able to withstand this phase,
where a large chunk of our ‘target market’ will go for another hotel and for the new
target market crowd slowly will avail of our services. It is a scary risk to take, sir.”
The Board of Trustees ordered Mr. Santos to give a detailed marketing suggestion
regarding this concern as soon as possible to remedy this problem. If you are Mr.
Santos, what would be your concrete suggestions and action plan?
Case 2
Ten months later, the patient returned to her gynecologist's office with increased vaginal
bleeding and discharge. Examination revealed supraclavicular nodes suggestive of
abnormality and abdominal wall skin tanning, and induration suggestive of cobalt
radiation therapy with high skin dose, as well as a fungating cervical mass invading the
rectal area creating a rectovaginal fistula. Computed tomography scan revealed disease
in the periaortic, mediastinal, and supraclavicular chain, as well as side-to-side pelvic
disease, ureteral obstruction complete on the right and partial on the left, and liver
metastases. Records of the patient's radiation therapy could not be obtained. These
findings and the grave nature of the disease were discussed with the patient and her
spouse. Though they initially asked the gynecologist to perform a “sensitivity” test
recommended by their herbal therapist, they ultimately decided on a trial of
chemotherapy. After stenting the ureters, angioemblization of the tumor to control
bleeding, multiple admissions for anemia secondary to cancer related blood loss,
colostomy to control vaginal discharge, and progression of disease, the patient died 21
months from her original diagnosis.
