HUMAN RESOURCES
SUMMIT 2004
“Rethinking HR in the Epoch of Change and Discontinuity”
16-17 August 2004 ~ Renaissance Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

“Every organisation has to prepare for the abandonment of everything it does.” – Peter Drucker

About the Summit

As rethinking guru Rowan Gibson puts it – linear thinking is useless in a non-linear world – HR professionals are
today faced with a new imperative to radically rethink work, jobs, talent, people management and simply the
fundamental role of HR if their organisations were to keep pace with the changing times and stay ahead of the curve.
Forces of change – new business imperatives, disruptive technologies, complexity, globalisation, liberalisation of
markets and human mobility, demographics, work-life needs – are unequivocally real that industries can be wiped
out or created overnight. It is in such challenging times, where nothing will remain constant except change, that the
importance of human capital as the most valuable asset in any organisation today is by no means an overstatement.

Rethinking HR is not optional. It is an imperative, and will clearly make the difference between organisations that
will succeed in the 21st century and those that will become footnotes in the history books of business. This has
obvious and significantly profound implications for the HR department in every organisation. Rather than busying
themselves merely with policies, regulations, hiring and firing, employee comfort, compensation and generic
training initiatives, HR professionals in the epoch of change and discontinuity must constantly strive to build and
strengthen the unique set of organisational capabilities, through the organisation’s human capital, that give the
company its competitive advantage. When most people still think of HR as a stodgy old personnel department with
policies that have continued since time immemorial, forward-thinking and successful organisations are taking HR
seriously by rethinking HR’s role with the conviction that HR can really add value and deliver results in a more
strategic role.

Towards this end, the National Human Resources Summit 2004, now in its fifth annual edition and built on the
foundations of remarkably successful past Summits, is intended to provide an opportunity for organisational policy
makers, top echelon of corporate management, heads of human resource, human resource managers and
practitioners, human resource consultants and professionals, and legal advisers to converge to discuss strategic
issues and key challenges reshaping the development of human resources in Malaysia. As Malaysian organisations
today prepare to drive off the road and on to the unfamiliar terrain that lies ahead, it becomes clear that they are
going to require a new kind of human capital vehicle, some very different driving skills and a whole new sense of
direction. This Summit is where we shall rethink the non-linear direction in which HR in the 21st century should be
heading.
