MATERIAL SPECIFICATION FOR ALLOYS

SCOPE: THIS DOCUMENT IS INTENDED TO BE ISSUED TO A SUPPLIER. IT INCLUDES


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS SPECIFIC TO ALLOYS FOR FABRICATED EQUIPMENT, INCLUDING
PCE AND PIPING.

IMPORTANT: READ APPLICABLE DESIGN CODES BEFORE USING MATERIAL.

1.1 WELDING

FOR WELDING REQUIREMENTS, SEE:

G8S-6500-01 GENERAL WELDING SPECIFICATION


G8S-6500-02 WELDING PROCESS REQUIREMENTS
G8S-6500-03 WELDING FILLER METAL SPECIFICATION

2.1 HEAT TREATING

THIS IS A CORROSION RESISTANT ALLOY AND HEAT TREATING ON ANY PORTION OF


THE PCE WILL REQUIRE A PROCEDURE WHICH SHALL BE SUBMITTED TO OWNER FOR
APPROVAL PRIOR TO HEAT TREATMENT.

3.1 FABRICATION

3.1.1 MARKING PAINT AND OILS USED FOR MACHINING AND DRILLING OPERATIONS
SHALL BE FREE OF MERCURY, LEAD, ZINC AND SULFUR.

3.1.2 ALLOY SURFACES SHALL BE PROTECTED FROM COATINGS CONTAINING ZINC OR


LEAD PIGMENTS. IN CASE SUCH COATINGS DO CONTACT ALLOY SURFACES,
THEY SHALL BE PROMPTLY AND COMPLETELY REMOVED BY ABRASIVE BLASTING
FOLLOWED BY AN ACID WASH WITH 10% PHOSPHORIC ACID. GRINDING IS
NOT ACCEPTABLE FOR ZINC REMOVAL.

4.1 CLADDING

4.1.1 THIS SPECIFICATION DOES NOT APPLY TO LOOSE LINERS. THE USE OF
LOOSE LINERS,WHEN REQUIRED, SHALL BE SPECIFIED BY DOW. LOOSE
LINERS ARE NOT A PREFERRED MEANS OF FABRICATION BUT WILL BE
CONSIDERED WHEN OTHER FABRICATION METHODS ARE NOT TECHNICALLY
POSSIBLE OR ARE COST PROHIBITIVE.

4.1.2 CLAD STEEL FOR EUROPE SHALL CONFORM TO ALL REQUIREMENTS OF AD


MERKBLATT W-8.

4.1.3 CARBON STEEL BACKING MATERIAL SHALL BE NORMALIZED PRIOR TO


EXPLOSIVE CLADDING.

4.1.4 ALL ROLL CLAD MATERIAL SHALL BE NORMALIZED. ANGLE BEAM (SHEAR)
TEST SHALL BE DONE AFTER NORMALIZING.

4.1.5 FOR IMPACT TESTING EXEMPTION PURPOSES, CURVE A OF FIGURE UCS-66 OF


ASME CODE, SECTION VIII, DIVISION 1, SHALL BE APPLIED TO ROLL CLAD
MATERIALS.

4.1.6 IF SA-516 GRADE 70 IS TO BE USED IN APPLICATION THAT FALLS UNDER


STOOMWEZEN, THEN THE MATERIAL SHALL NOT CONTAIN MORE THAN 0.23%
CARBON.

4.1.7 SHEAR AND BOND TESTS SHALL BE PERFORMED ON CLAD PLATE IN


ACCORDANCE WITH AD MERKBLATT W-8 OR ASME SA-263, SA-264 or SA-265
AS APPLICABLE. ALL TESTS MUST PASS THE REQUIREMENTS OF THESE
SPECIFICATIONS.

4.1.8 FINISHED CLAD PLATE, PRIOR TO FABRICATION, SHALL BE ULTRASONICALLY


TESTED PER AD MERKBLATT W-8 OR ASME SA-578 USING ACCEPTANCE
STANDARD LEVEL 1 AS APPLICABLE. SCANNING SHALL BE ON A 305 MM (12
INCH) GRID FOR MATERIAL USED AS SHELL PLATES AND ON A 76 MM (3
INCH) GRID FOR TUBESHEET MATERIAL AS A MINIMUM FOR NORTH AMERICA.
THE MINIMUM FOR EUROPE IS DEFINED IN AD MERKBLATT.

4.1.9 CLADDING SHALL BE FLUSH ON THE INSIDE OF ADJOINING HEADS AND SHELL
COURSES. TRANSITION BEVELS WHEN REQUIRED SHALL BE MADE ON THE
OUTSIDE.

4.1.10 CLADDING, OTHER THAN WELD METAL OVERLAY AND TUBESHEETS, SHALL BE 3
MM (1/8 INCH) MINIMUM THICKNESS AFTER ANY MACHINING UNLESS
OTHERWISE SPECIFIED.

4.1.11 ROLL AND EXPLOSION CLAD TUBESHEETS SHALL HAVE A NOMINAL 3 MM (1/8
INCH) OF CLADDING BENEATH THE BOTTOM OF THE PASS PARTITION GROOVES
AND 8 MM (5/16 INCH) NOMINAL FACING MATERIAL ON UNGROOVED AREAS.

4.1.12 WHEN CLADDING IS APPLIED TO THE SHELL SIDE OF AN EXCHANGER, THE


EXPANSION OF THE TUBES FROM ROLLING SHALL EXTEND TO WITHIN 3MM
(1/8 INCH) OF THE SHELL SIDE FACE OF THE TUBESHEET TO SEAL THE
TUBES TO THE CLADDING.

4.1.13 CLAD PLATE AND COMPONENTS SHALL NOT BE HEAT TREATED WITHOUT OWNER
APPROVAL.

5.1 WELD OVERLAY

5.1.1 WELDERS AND WELDING PROCEDURES SHALL BE QUALIFIED PER THE


REQUIREMENTS OF THE DESIGN CODE. ASME BOILER AND PV CODE, SECTION
IX REQUIREMENTS SHALL BE USED WHEN THE SPECIFIC DESIGN CODE DOES
NOT ADDRESS THIS AREA. PROCEDURES FOR CORROSION RESISTANT WELD
OVERLAY SHALL BE APPROVED BY OWNER.

5.1.2 FOR WELDED CLADDING, THE MINIMUM CLAD THICKNESS AFTER MACHINING
SHALL NOT BE LESS THAN THE THICKNESS QUALIFIED IN THE CORROSION
RESISTANT OVERLAY WELDING PROCEDURE SPECIFICATION.

6.1 TESTING

6.1.1 IF THE SUPPLIER UTILIZES GMAW OR FLUX CORE WELDING PROCESSES,


OWNER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO ULTRASONICALLY EXAMINE WELDED JOINTS
TO TEST FOR EVIDENCE OF COLD LAP, LACK OF PENETRATION OR LACK OF
FUSION. OWNER'S REPRESENTATIVE WILL CHOOSE APPROPRIATE ULTRASONIC
METHOD (EX. ANGLE BEAM, SHEAR WAVE). REJECTION CRITERIA SHALL BE
AS SPECIFIED IN THE DESIGN CODE. ASME BOILER AND PV CODE SECTION
VIII, DIVISION 1, APPENDIX 12, REQUIREMENTS SHALL BE USED WHEN THE
SPECIFIC DESIGN CODE DOES NOT ADDRESS THIS AREA.

6.1.2 IF ULTRASONIC TESTING REVEALS COLD LAP, LACK OF PENETRATION AND


FUSION, THE REQUIREMENTS FOR REPAIRS WILL REST WITH OWNER'S
REPRESENTATIVE AND THE COSTS FOR BOTH INSPECTION AND REPAIRS WILL
BE AT SUPPLIER'S EXPENSE. IF NO INDICATIONS ARE FOUND, THE COST
OF UT INSPECTION WILL BE AT OWNER'S EXPENSE.

6.1.3 HYDROTEST REQUIREMENTS

7.1 304/304L STAINLESS STEEL REQUIREMENTS

7.1.1 THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE STRESS TABLE IN ASME SECTION II, PART D
SHALL BE CONSULTED REGARDING THE APPLICABILITY AND LIMITATIONS ON
THE USE OF BAR STOCK FOR PRESSURE VESSEL COMPONENTS.

7.1.2 DUAL CERTIFICATION IS ACCEPTABLE FOR ALL APPLICATIONS. THE HIGHER


DESIGN ALLOWABLES SHALL BE USED FOR DESIGN TEMPERATURE LESS THAN
OR EQUAL TO 538 DEGREES C (1000 DEGREES F).

8.1 316/316L STAINLESS STEEL REQUIREMENTS

8.1.1 THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE STRESS TABLE IN ASME SECTION II, PART D
SHALL BE CONSULTED REGARDING THE APPLICABILITY AND LIMITATIONS ON
THE USE OF BAR STOCK FOR PRESSURE VESSEL COMPONENTS.

8.1.2 DUAL CERTIFICATION IS ACCEPTABLE FOR ALL APPLICATIONS. THE HIGHER


DESIGN ALLOWABLES SHALL BE USED FOR DESIGN TEMPERATURES LESS THAN
OR EQUAL TO 538 DEGREES C (1000 DEGREES F).

9.1 DUPLEX STAINLESS STEEL REQUIREMENTS

10.1 ALLOY B-2 REQUIREMENTS

10.1.1 WELDING FITTINGS (SB-366) SHALL BE SOLUTION ANNEALED. ANNEALING


SHALL BE DONE AT 1066 DEG C (1950 DEG F) +/- 14 DEG C (25 DEG F).
FITTINGS MUST BE WATER QUENCHED FROM ANNEALING TEMPERATURES.

11.1 FABRICATORS MUST PURCHASE MATERIALS FROM THE APPROPRIATE SUPPLIERS LISTED IN
G8S-4010-01, "REQUIREMENTS FOR FABRICATOR'S PURCHASE OF IN-SCOPE MATERIALS TO BE
USED IN EQUIPMENT FOR THE DOW CHEMICAL COMPANY AND SUBSIDIARIES."i
