– Present Tense (Ibanag)

– HISTORY

 The Ibanag (also Ybanag and Ybanak or Ibanak) are an ethnolinguistic minority
numbering a little more than half a million people, who inhabit the provinces of Cagayan,
Isabela and Nueva Vizcaya. They are one of the largest ethnolinguistic minorities in the
Philippines.
 Simple Present Tense
(Verb in base form) or (verb in base form + an “–s” ending.
 Examples
English: I play every Tuesday.
Tagalog: Naglalaro ako tuwing Martes.
Ibanag: Magagayang nga kada Martis.

English: My mother cooks food.

Tagalog: Ang nanay ko ay nagluluto ng pagkain.
Ibanag: Si yenâ ay maddagung mallutu tu kumang.

English: I eat bread every morning.

Tagalog: Kumakain ako ng tinapay tuwing umaga.
Ibanag: Kumukumang nga tu pang kada umma.

– RULES

 In English to Ibanag translation, a simple present tense will translate into a progressive tense.
 Add a prefix “ma” instead of “nag”, then the first syllable of the base form of the verb is repeated.
Example
Play- laro- gayang
naglalaro-magagayang

 You can also put an affix at the middle of the base form of the verb, then repeat the first syllable.
Example
eat-kain-kumang
kumakain-kumukumang
 Add an adverb of time like “maddagung”which is equivalent to the Tagalog word “kasalukuyan”.
Present Progressive Tense
helping "to be" verb, in the present tense, plus the present participle of the verb (with an -ing ending).
Examples
English: I am visiting my friend now.
Tagalog: Ako ay bibisita sa aking kaibigan ngayon.
Ibanag: Sô ay mabbisita ta kofûkku pangawe.

English: The kids are sleeping.

Tagalog: Ang mga bata ay natutulog.
Ibanag: I aralabbing ay maddagung makkaturug.
In Ibanag, the word “mga” has no translation, instead they just add prefixes.

Abbing-bata
aralabbing -mga bata

English: Abby is walking slowly.

Tagalog: Si Abby ay naglalakad ng mabagal.
Ibanag: Si Abby ay maddagung mallakag tu mabayag.

RULE
 Add a helping verb “ay” which is equivalent to “is”, then a prefix “ma”. Instead of repeating the
first syllable of the base form of the verb, you will just add the first letter of the base form to the
prefix “ma”.

bisita-ma+b +bisita=mabbisita
katurug +ma+ k+ katurug= makkaturug
lakag +ma+l+lakag=mallakag
Present Perfect Tense
“has” or “have” + past participle
Examples
English: I have played for his team before.
Tagalog: Nakapaglaro na ako sa grupo niya noon.
Ibanag: Nakagayang ngâ dang ta grupo da nguri.

English: I have already eaten the dinner.

Tagalog: Ako ay nakakain na ng hapunan.
Ibanag: Sô ay nakakang dang tu pamugag.

English: He has finished his work.

Tagalog: Katatapos lang niya sa kanyang trabaho.
Ibanag: Kababaling na lang ta trabafu na.

RULES
 In Ibanag, add prefix to the base form of the verb.
 Add “dang” which is equivalent into a Tagalog word “na” after the verb. Sometimes the word
“na” in Ibanag can be used as a pronoun.
Present Perfect Progressive Tense
“has been” or “have been ” + present participle
Examples
English: Sam has been working as a teacher since he graduated.
Tagalog: Si Sam ay nagtatrabaho bilang guro simula pa noong siya ay makatapos sa kanyang pag-aaral.
Ibanag: Si Sam ay maddagung natrabafu tu mestra namegafu paga nguri sa makabaling ta yayya
pagiskwela.

RULE
 In translating present perfect progressive tense in Ibanag, you will use a verb in present time.
Then, add an adverb of time (e.g., namegafu paga, ta mature, ganguri paga).
